In his own words: Dan Ramos on Stonewall, homosexuality (audio file)

March 21, 2011

Dan RamosI didn’t call Bexar County Democratic Chair Dan Ramos more than a week back to coax ugly epithets from the man. I called to talk shop. Specifically on my mind: the local party’s former treasurer heading back to court for a trial setting, and a bill introduced in the Texas Lege by state Representative Trey Martinez Fischer apparently aimed at unseating the divisive Ramos. While the local dems’ meetings have been flowing a bit more smoothly of late, inter-personal relationships feel as toxic as ever.

But when Ramos compared the Stonewall Democrats to the Nazi Party and homosexuals to children born with polio, I knew I had to step in front of my intended story with something more immediate. The first blog post was enough to inspire state Dem Party Chair Boyd Richie to call for Ramos’ resignation. Others quickly followed.

When I called Ramos back on Monday, March 14, he never denied the comments he had made, he only objected to their being emphasized to the exclusion of others. After all, our original interview lasted about 35 minutes. The anti-gay rhetoric? Just a few minutes.

Ramos referred to his 40 years of civil rights work, adding: “I don’t have to defend my way of doing things.”

[Our main news account was printed in last week's QueQue column.]

Last week, Ramos suggested at a press conference that his language had been manipulated, according to QSanAntonio.com, that perhaps it wasn’t even his voice on the recording. With that in mind, I thought it best to release the portion of the interview in question. The three minutes and forty seconds include both my questions and his unedited responses. Hopefully this will provide an appropriate level of clarity and answer any questions of the context in which the statements were made.

There is one gap in the recording below representing about 10 minutes in which Dan and I spoke about several other matters: including Fischer’s bill, the state chair, various other Democrats, as well as DA Susan Reed and Ramos’ efforts to widen the criminal investigation beyond Dwayne Adams via [what Ramos described as*] his personal lawsuit [but is being pursued by the Bexar County Democratic Party*] (which also names former party chair Carla Vela) being handled by SA attorney David Van Os. — Greg Harman

Thanks for the recording. It adds a bit of flavor and flow of the conversation. Ramos is obviously lucid, constructing his comments and imagery as he responds.

The frightening aspect is that he is non-chalant, matter-of-fact, and unapologetic in his comments. He really believes this hateful stuff and apparently lives among others who feel the same way and communicate the same ideas.

I pray that Ramos is not the tip an the iceberg lurking beneath the depths of the Westside. This level of hate could destroy the character of San Antonio.

Don’t let one fleabag, bigoted, ignorant racist color your views of the rest of any group, be they SA Westsiders, Hispanics, seniors, Catholics or any other. Are there others who believe as he does? Of course there are, but they are few and far between and lets face it, they are mostly in the Tea Party or the hills of Montana, the Dakota’s etc. in those Aryan Nation Camps who ironically wouldn’t have him.

    Greg,

You erroneously refer to Dan Ramos as having a “personal lawsuit (which also names former party chair Carla Vela) being handled by SA attorney David Van Os”. Dan is not pursuing a personal lawsuit against Adams or Vela, or against anyone else that I am aware of. I am representing the Bexar County Democratic Party in claims against Adams and Vela. I don’t know where you got the idea it is a Dan Ramos personal lawsuit. The pleadings are in the name of the Bexar County Democratic Party, not Dan Ramos.

Dan Ramos is afraid of losing his job; it is Texas after all! A Hispanic calling all the bigoted names in the book for all the “minority” groups is hypocrisy to the nth degree. What you being a Catholic makes you special somehow; all I get out of the news are Catholic sex scandals; and I recently heard that church membership has been dwindling! See youtube video:

Nice try though, there is a name for all of the “minority” groups and to mention the teabagger party, just turns my stomach!

I completely agree: it’s the nonchalance that’s so disturbing. He’s obviously pondered his position carefully and with deliberation: it’s not a rant.

I do hope he’s ousted from his position pronto — I’m stunned that he’s the chair of a party I normally associate with positions backed by social science. His comments on gay adoption are beyond the pale.

that’s exactly the way he described it to me, and our conversation about it didn’t clarify that point, but i’ll adjust the post.

The Bexar County Democratic Party has been operating with a deficit of imagination and resolve for many years. Many of the party old guard were willing to put up with Ramos’ hateful rhetoric (until your article) just as they accepted the indicted treasurer’s, Dwayne Adams’, rapacious behavior (until he was publicly exposed). Many of these folks have been and are useful dupes of these characters. For as long as I can remember, the party chair has behaved as if he/she was untouchable, unaccountable, and beyond any oversight. For me Ramos is a symptom of a much bigger problem that the party has to tackle. Now may be the time to do it.

Two things seemed to have changed:

—-new blood in the party is looking for accountability and refuse to just go along to get along.

—- the Ramos, Adams, Vela perfect storm of disasterous behavior has exposed fundamental problems with the way the party chooses it leadership, views its constituency, and handles its money.

The public has discounted the Bexar County Democratic party as a useless circus. Imagine, most of our elected Democratic officials see the party as a liability.

Once Ramos is gone (it will happen) real reforms must begin. The old guard (and we all know who they are) own this failure. They need to get their act together and begin acting like real Democrats. For many of these folks it’s time for the gold watch and a hearty handshake.

Wow. What is he talking about? You can’t take the blacks out of the cotton fields and put them on your porch? What does that even mean and how does that prove his point? I don’t even know what point this guy is trying to make. Believe it or not, I actually feel sorry for him :(

Ramos is obviously confused. Danny, the Cocoa Puff’s party is across the isle.

You were the Secretary of the BCDP @ the time and you mean to tell me that you have NO IDEA how 200k was taken from the Democratic Party???????? If you had no fiduciary responsibility then why is your name is on the checks? Hell there is a picture of you hugging your friend Dwayne Adams ever so tightly. I will be sure to take your picture alongside him in a jail cell, I am just hoping he barks because he was not alone in spending that money honey.
