Frankenweenie

A canine homage to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and the 1931 film it inspired, Tim Burton’s stop-motion animated feature Frankenweenie (2012) is an expanded remake of a live-action short that got him fired from Disney back in 1984. Set in New Holland (a symbol for the suburb Burton grew up in), the Oscar-nominated horror-comedy follows Victor Frankenstein, a young filmmaker/scientist who reanimates his beloved dog Sparky with a lightning-based process that leads to the accidental creation of a wererat, a vampire cat and a colony of humanoid Sea-Monkeys. Slab Cinema and the McNay join forces for an outdoor screening of the film preceded by tours of the exhibition “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (comprising characters, sets and props from Burton’s 1993 classic) and Halloween treats. Free, 7-9pm Thursday, McNay Art Museum, 6000 N New Braunfels, (210) 824-5368, mcnayart.org. —Bryan Rindfuss
