The Urban West: Chinatown

Chinatown

With the California Water Wars as its historical anchor, Roman Polanski’s neo-noir classic Chinatown spins a mysterious web within 1930s-era Los Angeles. Released in 1974, the film follows private detective J.J. “Jake” Gites (Jack Nicholson) on an increasingly bizarre investigation involving Water Department chief Hollis Mulwray (Darrell Zwerling), his widow Evelyn (Faye Dunnaway), her dangerous father Noah Cross (John Huston) and a young girl caught in the eye of a sordid storm. The Briscoe screens the Oscar winner in the Jack Guenther Pavilion as part of its new film series The Urban West. $4-$5, 7pm Tuesday, Briscoe Western Art Museum, 210 W Market, (210) 299-4499, briscoemuseum.org. —Bryan Rindfuss
