Suitcase Wheel is a 16-foot diameter wheel made of vintage Samsonite suitcases stacked face-to-face to form a circle that is held together by a metal ring.
While the glorious Meyer Lemon has a specifically wonderful character, I am of the opinion that fresh citrus in general is one of the finest tools in the culinary arsenal. Fortunately, we live in a climate that favors home-growing a whole range of citrus goodness. Most tolerate a light freeze, don’t need huge amounts of water, and are as pretty as they are fragrant. Some exotics don’t do as well here, but lemons (including the Meyer), limes, and Mexican sour oranges seem to thrive. Show them a little care and attention and they can be surprisingly productive. Last year, my neighbor picked up giant bags-full of limes off her patio every morning, which she happily shared. A friend in Beeville has a 12-foot lemon tree so loaded with fruit that one bough is propped up with a wooden post to keep it from breaking off. Sour oranges are also productive, making excellent margaritas, ceviche, and the classic marinade for Yucatecan pollo or cochinita pibil. So what do you do with all the extra fruit? Aside from sharing with appreciative neighbors, the most obvious is to squeeze and freeze: invest in a simple juicer, freeze in small containers or [...]

Want to open a new restaurant on the Museum Reach stretch of the river, with plenty of parking, and an upscale partner that will drag in traffic? Hot shot restaurateurs — here’s your chance. By mutual agreement, Damien Watel’s Café des Artistes is closing business soon at San Antonio Museum of Art, and SAMA is looking for a new dining partner. All we ask is that you establish a cigar smoking area outside so Current critics can enjoy extended stays at your new joint. Here’s a few words from the RFP: “The San Antonio Museum of Art is looking for a restaurant that offers a casual dining experience with an upscale ‘vibe,’ serving fresh, seasonal food. Our goal is to have a restaurant that is both a destination unto itself and a reason to visit the Museum. The restaurant is a highly valued visitor amenity and an important face of the Museum. We want it to be a source of profit for the restaurateur and the Museum. While the Museum wishes to be a marketing partner of the restaurant, the restaurant will be independently operated by the restaurateur. The selected restaurateur could also be the preferred caterer for frequent small [...]

The San Antonio Cocktail Conference, now in its second year, is again presenting The Original Cocktail Competition. Pros and probies alike will compete for prizes topping out at $2500 — and among the early entrants, there are some of both. The judges include Dale DeGroff aka King Cocktail; Audrey Saunders, owner of Pegu Club in NYC; Pat Sharpe, food editor of Texas Monthly; Michael Madrusan, owner and operator of The Everleigh in Melbourne, Australia–and Ron Bechtol, food, wine and spirits writer here at the Current. We asked our critic of all things ingestible to get some background on this year’s contestants. Here’s his post: Returning contestant Houston Farris, who works at Houston’s Hotel Icon, and who drove in last year “with [an incontinent] puppy and a pregnant wife,” says “I’m actually R&D-ing this cocktail quite a bit, more so than I’ve done for other cocktails” in hopes of winning this time. Another veteran, both of the SA event and elsewhere, is Stephan Mendez of Bar 1919. Mendez, who won a contest in Austin last year, is submitting “a variation of a drink I have already come up with … just fine tuning proportions and ‘forcing’ coworkers to test the cocktail.” [...]

San Antonio lost a bright light in the local art scene yesterday. Krisanne Frost, well-known local artist and the gallery liaison at Blue Star Contemporary Art Center, died December 6 from cancer at age 61 after being diagnosed just weeks ago. Born in Houston, she spent much of her youth in the Hill Country. At Blue Star, she was the one visiting artists turned to when setting up their exhibitions. She was known to the public as the vibrant presence who met visitors at the Blue Star galleries, happily answering questions about the art on view. “Krisanne was the smile and the welcome that greeted everyone that came into Blue Star,” said Bill FitzGibbons, director of Blue Star Contemporary Art Center. “She loved showing visitors the various exhibitions and spending time discussing the artists and their artwork. Krisanne’s kind and gracious spirit will be truly missed by all of us.” “Krisanne was a vibrant part of the San Antonio community and, for the past seven years, the spark of Blue Star,” said Elizabeth Lyons, Blue Star’s marketing and programming manager. “She was wise beyond this world, and her fiery spirit was reflected upon anyone fortunate enough to encounter her. One to three poems may be submitted, and each poem should be no longer than 10 lines, including title and spaces.
The Artist Foundation of San Antonio (AF) has issued its open call for 2012 award applications. The deadline to apply is Monday, November 19. Up to 11 $5,000 awards will be made in the categories of Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Literary Arts, Media Arts, Classical Singing, Set Design and Costume Design. Interested artists can find additional details and apply online at artistfound.org or write to info@artistfound.org for more information. Awards will be announced in January, 2013. There will be an artist application workshop at Trinity University Digital Lab on Saturday, November 10, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Including these 2012 awards, the AF will have granted more than $465,000 to 86 San Antonio artists. The awards are evident in new creative work shown at exhibitions and productions locally and beyond. Recently, Lisa Perello, winner of the 2011 Tobin Award for Costume Design, staged her innovative flamenco costume and dance performance at Say Si’s Black Box Theatre, a production made possible with her award. “The key to the Artist Foundation’s success has been to keep their operation lean and laser-focused on their mission,” says Bruce Bugg, Tobin Endowment Chairman and funder of the Tobin Grand Prize for Artistic Excellence, a $7500 grant which [...]

The culinary action just doesn’t seem to stop in Southtown. Bite, a new venture by Lisa Astorga-Watel, wife of Damien Watel (Bistro Vatel, Bistro Bakery, Cafe des Artistes), launches its grand opening today, Wednesday October 17, with an eclectic menu with a “70′s modern twist.” Look for smaller (but not tapas-sized, we’re told) portions of Euro-fare and reasonable prices: steak tartare and toast, $18; salmon cuadrado, $16; octopus carpaccio, $14 are a few items on today’s menu of a dozen offerings, which also includes a lobster springroll with an entire lobster tail, $15. Astorga-Watel was trained at The Culinary Art Institute in Houston, and was a private chef for celebrities before marrying. Given husband Damien’s celebrity chef status, expect local glitterati to gnosh at this new late night hangout.
Think public art is an insiders’ game? Many artists do, but it’s the daunting complexity of the endeavor — working with contractors, and managing plans and paperwork — that keeps the same names on the lists. Here’s a way to learn the ropes. Public Art San Antonio (PASA), is working with local artist Cruz Ortiz to recruit a team of local artists and designers to create installations for CUT AND PASTE, a downtown storefront exhibition organized by the City of San Antonio’s Department for Culture and Creative Development (formerly OCA, the Office of Cultural Affairs). CUT AND PASTE will be on view this fall and throughout the winter at vacant properties downtown. But hurry — the online application deadline is Tuesday, October 16 at 5 pm. Stipend for participating is $500. For more info call PASA at (210) 207-1436 or visit publicartsa.com

San Anto Cultural Arts Has been mentoring teens and putting up murals on the Westside since 1993. With now 44 huge artworks in place, their Community Mural Pubic Art Program is one of the largest long- running mural projects in the U.S. SACA also publishes El Placazo Community Newspaper, manages a video oral history program, and provides other support to neighborhoods. But it all takes your support. If you are an artist (or collector) here’s a chance to give back to a community- based nonprofit that is integral to the arts in SA. Celebrating its 15th year, SACA is currently accepting art submissions for its 2012 Huevos Rancheros Quinceañera Celebration Breakfast Gala and Silent Art Auction, to be held October 6. Deadline for submission is September 14. The event was created in 1998 to raise funds for programming and general operating costs. Held annually in October, the Huevos Rancheros Gala is much more than a fundraising event. Each year the gala honors King and Queen Huevo of San Antonio – two individuals who are chosen for their contributions to the arts and cultural vibrancy of our city. This year’s King Huevo is prominent visual artist Alex Rubio, and Queen Huevo [...]

San Antonio Pet’s Alive! (SAPA) has saved (sheltered, spayed, neutered, vaccinated, medically treated, microchipped, fostered, and adopted out) over 4000 cats and dogs since they opened their doors in January 2012. But the number of stray and surrendered dogs, puppies, cats and kittens coming into Animal Control Services facilities is increasing daily at an alarming rate. This means SAPA needs forever homes and foster parents for the rescues currently being sheltered to make room for the influx of homeless dogs and cats. Just in time for back to school, San Antonio Pets Alive! wants to show off their wonderful summer collection of animal companions. They are featuring their lovely black dogs and cats. Pets with black coats are sometimes over-looked and become “long stays,” animals that desperately need to be adopted or fostered. When they are placed, SAPA can use their space to house the onslaught of animals needing to be rescued now. Research shows that people with dogs and cats feel considerably less stress and are generally happier. What better way to transition back into the grind of school than with faithful and loving four legged friends? Partake in relaxing belly rubs. Healthy dog walks. Fetch. Purrrr therapy. The advantages [...]

This week’s cover was a lot of fun to put together. It’s been a personal goal of mine to create a cover entirely out of Lego (as a kid I used to build my own X-Wings and Batmobiles out of the stuff), and when the Team Better Block story came up, I knew this was a perfect opportunity. To replicated Alamo Plaza and the surrounding city block, I needed to turn to the experts: The Texas Lego User Group. I saw their amazingly detailed and expansive train build at this year’s Texas Comicon, and knew they could help make it happen. Chris MacDougald, founder of TexLUG-SA (the local chapter in San Antonio), and founding co-chair of Brick Fiesta (an annual fan-run event that draws Lego master builders and thousands of Lego maniacs) created the Lego Alamo from photo reference (called “free build” in Lego terminology) and built up the rest of the city block around it. I had a hand in populating the city with mini-figures: tourists, locals, punks, construction workers … and then we threw in a mummy, Wonder Woman, an Ewok (yep, it’s in there), a gorilla, and other easter eggs. My own personal favorite — a Lego recreation of [...]

Team Better Block takes the new urbanism term ‘placemaking’ literally, constructing temporary mock-ups of people-friendly cityscapes in blighted blocks at cities across the country. The idea is, if investors can get a look at a better future, they just might build one. And after the demo, they often do, turning abandoned buildings to boutiques, sandwich shops, and other pedestrian friendly amenities. Sometimes even famous city spots need help, too. A vision of a better Alamo Plaza will be on view for comment next weekend, August 17-18, after local volunteers put out some effort to translate the streets in front of the Alamo into a walking space with music, food, and history tours. As part of the City of San Antonio’s Center City Development Office’s place-making initiative, the community is invited to help build a Better Block at Alamo Plaza between East Houston and East Crockett Streets. Community members can get involved with the Pre-Build Workshop on Friday, Aug. 10, from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 11, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. To participate, meet at he former Express Store, Rivercenter Mall, located at 849 E.
