Beer dinners, considered a major food and drink trend by chefs polled by the National Restaurant Association, are getting more buyin from restauteurs in San Antonio. This week, the folks at Westin La Cantera Resort are trying their hand at what they hope will be a regular thing. On Friday, May 27, Westin La Cantera chefs Isaac Cantu and Henry Wesolowski bring a lineup of mouthwatering food to pair with the Shiner beers from the Spoetzl Brewery. The food speaks for itself. And apparently it has a lot to say based on the number of words used to describe each dish, so you can read the full menu and beer pairings at this link. I’m particularly interested in the pairing of smoked bacon oyster mushrooms with a Deep Ellum Blue melt paired with Shiner’s new summer seasonal Ruby Redbird, a lager made with the addition of grapefruit and ginger. Tickets are $45 plus tax and gratuity and can be reserved at (210) 558-2305. Brasserie Pavil continues its monthly beer dinner tradition June 7 with creations from Chef Rene Bajeux paired with beers from Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. You can read the full menu at this link, but take note of the interesting [...]

In 2012, Houston beer drinkers will get what they’ve been waiting for: a brewpub. Since the Two Rows brewpub in Houston shut it’s doors in October over a rent dispute with the landlord, Houston has had to make do with it’s myriad of great beer bars and a handful of local microbreweries. Not so shabby. But being the fouth largest city in the nation and not have a brewpub, even as the craft-brew craze reached molten-lava intensity, was a distinction that city’s beer lovers could do without. They were smarting when down to one. Last year, with business success and beer that has received state and nationwide noteriety, San Antonio’s Freetail Brewing Co., began a hunt for a second location. (In Texas, brewpubs can only sell their beer on the site where it is brewed, so it usually comes along with a restaurant). Scott Metzger created Project Gemini to attract the attention of suitors for a brewpub and floated the ideas of New Braunfels, San Marcos and Dallas as possible locations. Those were mostly red herrings and a strategy usually used by big corporations to squeeze incentives out of cities, by giving the illusion of competition for those jobs. It was always Houston. Or at the very least Houston emerged very early on as the place to go not [...]

Impediments are falling away to a common-sense bill allowing microbreweries in Texas to have take-away beer as part of the price of a tour. Archaic beer laws in the state have been in need of a tuneup for years even as wine laws have slowly progressed. With nearly a month to go in the 82nd Texas Legislature, HB 602 has been unchallenged in the House Licensing and Procedures Committee, on the House floor and quickly moved to the Senate and into the Senate Business and Commerce Committee. This is a far cry from previous attempts at a similar bill over the last two sessions. In 2009, the proposal from Rep. Jessica Farrar made it out of the committee, but was chubbed to death as voter ID fights left other hopeful bills waiting in the wings. In 2007, the bill still made just as much sense, but the games legislators and powerful lobbyists play left it stranded in committee. Now the bill has apparently paid its dues and previous opponents of the bill are no longer opposing it. The most likely reason is that they are trying to seem reasonable while making their untenable aguements against HB 660, the bill that would [...]

Freetail Brewing Co. in San Antonio just tapped its new Self eSteem Texas Uncommon beer. It is somewhat crisp, a little rich fruit character and a mildly assertive citrus-like hop. This smacks of session beer and cries out for a second pint, very doable at just over 5 percent alcohol by volume.
