About six years ago I was looking for a change of scenery. At the time I was living in Houston, but I was hoping to intensify my research into all manner of mysterious creatures. I was familiar with accounts of monstrous birds that had been reported sailing over the skies of San Antonio and had also read about reports of Bigfoot near the old Kelly Air Force Base during the 1970s. In addition, I knew about the legacy of San Antonio oil millionaire Tom Slick who had organized and sponsored expeditions to search for the mysterious Yeti of the Himalayas during the 1950s. Combine all of that with my love of good Mexican food and well … the Alamo City became the obvious choice. However, since moving here in 2006 I have discovered that this city’s legacy of strange stories seems to surpass all other American cities. Many of the local legends have been the focal point of this very blog. For example, next to New Orleans, San Antonio has a stout reputation within the paranormal community as a Mecca for ghost hunters. The Alamo and Menger Hotel rank among the most haunted. But, one can make a long list [...]

‘Tis the season when strange things go bump in the night and all manner of scary beasts creep and crawl through moonlit graveyards. Yet, perhaps no goblin is more symbolic to South Texas than the Latino boogeyman known as El Cucuy. Like most urban legends, there are many interpretations to this myth. Though the prevailing image is that of a diminutive, hairless creature with an enormous head that dwarfs his spider-like body. Include large, glowing eyes, razor sharp fangs and claws and it makes for a spine-chilling image. Over protective mothers warn their children not to stray too far from home, or else they might fall prey to El Cucuy, One account I’ve collected from the small, Texas town of Dickens causes one to wonder if there may be a grain of truth behind the stories. According to her testimonial, a young, female student was driving home alone one evening during 2006, when she noticed a goblin-like creature crouched on top a fencepost outside of town. The witness later described the thing as being about three-feet tall, with a sloping, round head like an owl, large, slanted eyes and a tiny nose and mouth. The monster’s peach-colored skin was wrinkled [...]

Just recently I interviewed a local woman named Stacy Alejos who related an extremely creepy and disturbing tale to me. According to Stacy, when she was a very young girl living on the far Westside of San Antonio, she was awoken one night by an uncomfortable sensation and felt eerily compelled to look out her bedroom window. As her eyes adjusted to the darkness, Stacy could clearly make out the outline of a humanoid figure standing behind the white picket fence that surrounded her yard. Though she couldn’t make out much in the way of features, she could clearly discern what she interpreted to be a “pork pie” hat atop the figure’s head. As Stacy watched fearfully, the being began to sidle in a strange sideways motion, all the while keeping its outstretched arms on the top fence post. When she noticed the audible crunching of dried leaves beneath the entity’s feet, Stacy was quite sure that she was not dreaming, nor imagining things. Understandably terrified, the young girl dove underneath her sheets, quaking in fear until morning. Her adamant attempts to wake her aunt, who was sleeping next to her at the time, were futile. It almost seemed as [...]

At or around 1:30 a.m. on the morning of August 3, local authorities investigated a report of an ‘African lioness’ running loose in western Bexar County. Evidently, a woman who lives on Mesquite Trail near Talley Road phoned the Sheriff’s office after spotting the menacing animal prowling her neighborhood. A subsequent 90-minute search that involved a San Antonio police helicopter turned up nothing significant, only some deer. As startling as this scenario sounds, it’s not the first time that extremely out-of-place critters have been described by locals. Last summer, a gentleman who lives near Helotes informed me that he was quite sure that he had repeatedly seen an African hyena crossing a county road that he traveled on his way home from work. I checked out the location, but was never able to confirm the man’s account. Many readers will recall the incident in November of 2010 when a full-grown cougar escaped from an exotic wildlife refuge near Leslie Road and 1604. Residents in that Westside neighborhood were warned to stay indoors until the big cat could be tranquilized by wildlife officials. In September of 2010, an escaped monkey was captured off of Boerne Stage Road on the city’s north [...]

Readers of my blog are aware that I am fond of pointing out that San Antonio is one of those places that seems to beget a bounty of weird urban legends. One of the most whimsical and macabre tales involves an estate that had the colorful name of Midget Mansion (also known as Gillespie Mansion). So named because it was apparently constructed with low-hanging fixtures and low ceilings, the tenants were reputed to be a family of little people. Specifically, the patriarch and his wife, though the residence was evidently also inhabited by their normal-sized children and also some servants. The father is said to have been a successful businessman during the 1920s who had the home tailored to his unique specifications. For many years neighbors would curiously observe the habitation and its novel tenants. Then events took a tragic turn one day when the father allegedly went mad, murdering his entire family and then himself for reasons unknown (at least according to the story). The mansion understandably remained abandoned for the decades that followed and ultimately fell to ruins. Rumors of shadowy figures and disembodied noises emanating from the location were prevalent for years, leading to a foregone conclusion [...]

It appears as though a dozen or so UFO sightings that were reported to San Antonio police earlier this month have been explained. A local news station broadcast the story about illuminated globes that were spotted floating over the Alamo City by several residents on the evening of May 17. One eyewitness named Roger Barrera even managed to videotape one of the strange objects as it passed over his home. As it turns out, Barrera’s neighbor has claimed responsibility for launching what are known as sky lanterns — essentially paper balloons that float in the air, elevated by the heat of a small candle that is placed in the center. Nevertheless, Texas has played host to some notable, unexplained UFO flaps over the years. During the fall of 1951, the Lubbock Lights were observed and photographed by many people in that community, including three professors from Texas Tech University. The lights were generally described as several, bright orbs flying in a “V” formation. Never solved, it stands as one of the first significant cases in the history of the UFO phenomenon. Clearly the most important wave of recent years has centered around the town of Stephenville, Texas, which lies about [...]

While to most, the full moon represents frantic driving and unpredictable behavior, to those in the business of ‘monsters’ it is significant for an entirely different reason — lycanthropy, i.e. werewolves. Now, before you place the butterfly net over my head, please be advised that, while generally perceived to be strictly, fictional creatures from literature and fairy tales, modern accounts of these terrors do exist. Most notably, Wisconsin’s Beast of Bray Road, described by eyewitnesses as displaying the characteristics of a large wolf stalking the local forests and corn fields in an upright posture. During 2008, I had the distinct honor of traveling to France for a History Channel television special where I investigated The Beast of Gevaudan, which was alleged to have attacked hundreds of simple farm-folk during the late 18th century. Evidently, the notion of real werewolves has been around for a while. Few San Antonio residents, however, are aware that the nearby community of Converse boasts its very own man-beast legend. According to the story, which I’ve found attributed to the 1800s and as recently as the 1960s, a local rancher instructed his teenage son to strike out to shoot his first deer (as a passage to [...]

Within the field of monster hunting (cryptozoology), much ado is made about such notable, enigmatic creatures as Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and the Chupacabra. But, among the lesser-known ‘cryptids’ that are reported with regularity are ABCs — Alien Big Cats. Frequently referred to as Black Panthers, these large, elusive felids have been spotted all over the United States, despite the fact that there are no known, native big cats that match the descriptions. The American mountain lion, also known as the cougar or puma, can obtain lengths of seven feet and weights approaching 150 pounds, but they are typically tawny, brown or gray and no known black specimens have ever been documented. Bobcats are not considerably bigger than large house cats and are easily identifiable by their high haunches and stubby tails. Recently, I joined up with some other mystery animal researchers, as we attempted to solve the mystery surrounding one such phantom cat. Multiple sightings and even an alleged video have emanated from a place known as Tate’s Hell State Forest in the Apalachicola region of Florida’ s panhandle over the past two years. And interest in the enigmatic cat is so great that the Carrabelle City Commission [...]

One need only to surf the myriad cable channels to recognize that ghost hunting is close to becoming a bona fide American pastime. Spawned by programs like Ghost Hunters and Ghost Adventures, numerous groups have sprung up around the country hoping to get a glimpse behind the shadowy veil of the paranormal. Understandably, paranormal conferences and gatherings have begun to spring up as well drawing respectable crowds of curiosity seekers. One such conference is coming to South Central Texas the second weekend of March. Dubbed the Texas Paranormal Unity Fest 2012 by organizer Becca Shugart, the event will be held outdoors at the colorful Dragonz Wylde Ranch near Round Rock, March 9-12, and will feature ghost hunting teams and guest speakers from all over the country. “When I first got into the field, I saw a lot of selfish motivation. There wasn’t enough camaraderie and different teams seemed to be in competition,” Shugart said during a recent phone interview. “I wanted to create an event that would bring people together.” Shugart, who grew up in Florida, became interested in the paranormal as a youth, growing up in an old house that was apparently populated with the spirits of ill and [...]

The month of January marks the anniversary of one of the strangest creature sagas in the history of Texas… that of Big Bird. We’re not talking about Sesame Street here folks. During the year of the nation’s bicentennial, some 36 years ago, dozens of citizens from San Antonio to the Rio Grande Valley reported sightings of an enormous, man-sized bird that was seen soaring through the skies and in some cases, accosting those who were unlucky enough to be in its path. It all started near the end of 1975 when two police deputies from Harlingen had an early-morning encounter with a bird with a 10-foot wingspan gliding over their patrol cars. This was quickly explained away as a simple misidentification of a large pelican. But on New Year’s Day, two teenage girls named Tracy Lawson and Jackie Davies stated they observed a scary, five-foot-tall bird leering at them in their yard as they played. Their parents discovered some enormous, three-toed tracks the next day that were featured on a local news broadcast. Hysteria soon erupted. On January 7, a Brownsville man named Alverco Guajardo heard something slam into his trailer home and when he went out to confront the [...]

Throughout the years, the Alamo City has played host to some colorful and courageous personalities. Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, and Theodore Roosevelt instantly come to mind. But perhaps the most flamboyant San Antonio figure was the celebrated millionaire and adventurer Tom Slick. Though he was born in Pennsylvania and raised in Oklahoma, it was while living in Texas, and particularly his beloved San Antonio, that this jet-setting explorer had his greatest impact. Most old-timers in the Alamo City remember the handsome and dashing oil tycoon, inventor, and art collector who founded well-known Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research (now Texas Biomed) and Mind Science Foundation, owned his own airstrip, and traveled the world hunting and fishing, often in search of hidden treasures and mysterious creatures. Slick came from an influential family and he was smart: attending Yale, Harvard, and M.I.T while majoring in engineering, the natural sciences, and medicine. Tom loved intrigue and exploration. While in college, he made a trek to Scotland with some friends, in order to investigate reports of the Loch Ness Monster. In 1957, after he had made his fortune, Slick organized a pair of expeditions to search for the abominable snowman, or Yeti, of the Himalayas, [...]

Our planet’s skies are being invaded by extraterrestrials. Or, at least that’s what a group of experts who will be visiting San Antonio in March believe. I just learned that a UFO mini-symposium would be held in the Alamo City during the first weekend of March 2012, according to Steve Hudgeons, the state director for the Mutual UFO Network (or MUFON). Hudgeons who, I spoke with recently, said the event will feature Travis Walton, the famous abductee whose story was later made into the Hollywood movie Fire in the Sky. Walton and six other forest workers claimed that they observed an unearthly silvery disc hovering over Arizona’s Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest on November 5, 1975. When Travis exited the truck in order to get a closer look at it he was, apparently zapped by a blue beam that emanated from the craft, rendering him unconscious and causing the other men to flee in terror. But the story doesn’t end there, since Walton seemingly vanished for five days until he turned up dazed, skinny and thirty-three miles away. Remarkably that he was only dressed in jeans and a light jacket when he disappeared, so he most certainly should have died of hypothermia. [...]

One of my favorite San Antonio sagas involves a dubious character known as the Dancing Devil. According to many long-time residents, as well as newspaper articles from the time, a dashing and handsome young man (el guapo) dressed in all white entered El Camaroncito Night Club on Old Highway 90 one night during Halloween of 1975. According to those who tell the story, the man was a fabulous dancer and wooed many of the señoritas in attendance. As the evening went on however, things took a horrific turn when one of the man’s dancing partners happened to glance down at his feet. The woman suddenly screamed out in terror, broke free of the man’s grip, and began pointing downward. It was then, amidst a flurry of gasps and shrieks that the patrons noticed the man’s shoes had transformed into long, clawed chicken’s feet. In some versions of the story, his feet had become goat’s hooves (perhaps the Donkey Lady’s kin). Either way, it was a bad sign to be sure, as the attendees were now quite sure they were in the presence of the devil himself! After an uncomfortable silence, the man dashed (or perhaps waddled or galloped) towards the [...]

In H.G. Wells’ classic science fiction novel The Island of Dr. Moreau, diabolical experimentation by a madman leads to an island being inhabited by a menagerie of anthropomorphic beast men. However, the notion of hybrids between humans and animals dates far back in history, with accounts of creatures like mermaids and centaurs being prevalent in various folklore. There are in fact many urban legends around the U.S. that point to an ongoing belief in comparable beings, who apparently stalk the forests, bridges, railroad tracks, and lover’s lanes in remote areas. For example, Texas and Maryland both boast a monster known as the Goat Man, (a reference to the Devil perhaps)? Maryland also has a legend about a Pig Woman, while nearby Virginia plays host to the Bunny Man. Down south in the Carolinas we find accounts of the Lizard Man, and I recently heard about a Cat Man that stalks southeast Alabama. Not to be outdone, Michigan’s Dog Man, a veritable modern werewolf, has reportedly been encountered by numerous witnesses in recent years. San Antonio’s strange Donkey Lady deserves her rightful place among them. A well-known local legend states that a creepy, little bridge on the city’s Southside is haunted [...]
