“Shh…I am in SA!” read the subject line of Marisol Deluna’s email. I’d been trying to pin down the San Antonio native turned New Yorker since the Marisol Deluna New York 15th anniversary fashion show at Manhattan’s General Society Library last spring. After viewing Getty images and celebrity photographer Patrick McMullan’s photos online, I learned that the event celebrated her couture and signature collections with vibrant silk and cotton apparel alongside accessories for men, women, children and pets. While briefly meeting Deluna during her private family visit to San Antonio, I chased her down in New York to get a glimpse of the designer in her element. Luckily, she graciously invited me to her downtown loft and midtown design studio, where I learned other native San Antonians have also tread while working towards building their own fashion careers. Based in New York since 1989, Deluna frequently invites creative students from Texas to not only visit, but get their feet wet in the fashion industry, like Korissa Henley Clark, one of Deluna’s first interns she still keeps in touch with today, “Marisol offered me the opportunity of a lifetime in New York City. My time with her gave me more clarity [...]

Shame on Travel +Leisure magazine. For a publication that considers itself the authority on the subject of travel, its supposed survey of “America’s Worst Dressed People” (June 2012), which cites San Antonio in the five slot among other supposed fashion offenders like Anchorage, Dallas, Phoenix, and Atlanta, demonstrates only that it subscribes to stereotypes and un-researched findings. Looking into this story, I found that the metric used to reach their conclusions were super strategic and intelligent. Not. Instead, following the current trend of opinion-as-fact articles, T+L asked readers to vote which city is the most fashionable. Then they called it a “survey,” without confirming whether or not voters had been to all cities in all 50 states. I’m assuming that the purpose of reading T+L in the first place is to get expert advice about travel, but now we’re getting expert advice from people who’ve probably never left their computers, let alone traveled to Alaska. The brilliant “Worst Dressed” city descriptions that do not coincide with the survey or its findings are pretty random too: “San Antonio is known for rodeos, not runways. Take the famous San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, a three-week extravaganza at which you won’t feel [...]

Photos by Bryan Rindfuss Story by famous Chick-Lit Writer Desiree Prieto, as usual What does one talk about while interviewing absolutely talented, drop-dead gorgeous—not to mention famous—designers visiting from New York City? Well to start with, the weather. “It’s fucking hot, ha?” I asked Logan Neitzel, after he declared that it was in fact his first time not only in San Antonio, but the vast state of Texas. “Yes, it’s super hot,” he began, “I left New York and it was 50 degrees and raining. So, it’s nice here. Totally.” “Here” happens to be the sloan/hall on Broadway, where the designer is launching a collection in the new women’s fashion department made specifically for the stores in San Antonio and Houston. Neitzel’s fashion career began after design school in Seattle, with an international knitwear company, New York Fashion Week, and a stint in reality television. “So do we need to talk about Project Runway?” I politely asked with hesitation, given that the show is in its ninth season and Neitzel starred in its sixth. “I’m totally tired and over it,” the tall and sexy designer divulged. “It was a long time ago and a good decision to get to where [...]

If you already have plans for tomorrow, Saturday May 5th, you’ll want to break them as Betsey Johnson is coming to San Antonio’s North Star Mall Dillard’s from 2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m. I have no idea what the famous fashion icon and designer is doing here, but I’m hoping to find out. I’m assuming she must have some layover given her short appearance at the Dillard’s location by the airport. Who the hell knows, but right now, I’m trying to figure out how I can get out of my girlfriend’s baby shower tomorrow. Either way, Fashionation is investigating and plans to find out what the story is. If you don’t know who Betsey Johnson is, then you’re clearly a Flinstone and I can’t help you. Betsey Johnson’s fantastical dresses really make me feel like a silly girlie girl and I absolutely love it; when I wear her bright pixy-fairy creations, I envision myself in a Chick-Lit novel, getting off my own lear jet, with a pair of outlandish Aubrey Hepburn sunglasses and a little silk scarf flying in the wind yelling, “I am fabulous!” I’m sure Johnson’s crazy creativity hails from her hey-day of the 60s counterculture, which included working—and playing—with [...]

Hey “Project Runway” fans, guess who’s coming to San Antonio’s sloan/hall location today, Wednesday, April 25, from 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.? Logan Neitzel is launching his collection in the store’s new women’s fashion department. After design school in Seattle, the 26-year-old farm boy from Blackfoot, Idaho, began his fashion career with an international knitwear company, “Project Runway,” and New York Fashion Week. I’m told there was some bartending, a trip to China, and a bit of hustling somewhere in there, so perhaps his journey wasn’t all gravy; if you’ve seen him on Lifetime, apparently you already know. “Logan’s work nods to trends, but is designed for those with an individual approach to style,” said Shannon Hall, co-owner of sloan/hall. “One of our favorite pieces is a black leather cap-sleeve harness. It looks tough until you put it over a frilly cocktail dress and you create an interesting dichotomy between Snow White and Mad Max.” Neitzel’s “Project Runway” Casting Video

On Saturday afternoon, artists Bryson and Holly Hein Brooks showcased their work at “Glam, Bam, Thank You Ma’am” for Contemporary Art Month (CAM). The stylish event, hosted at John Speegle and Leandra Hernandez’s urban San Antonio Riverwalk Space, featured iconic artwork ranging from $50 to $5,000—with a twist. The silk-screen and fully-painted works of Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor (as Cleopatra), Elvis and Iggy Pop are actually self portraits. “I just slightly changed a little 10% of something,” said Holly Brooks, who lives at Blue Star Contemporary Art Center with her husband, “They’re all kind of self-portraits in a way. I always add something of me within these iconic people.” While Holly creates art inspired by some of the most fashionable pop-culture icons in history, Andy Warhol—and herself— she was influenced by the work of Franco Mondini Ruiz early in her career. Ruiz taught her and her husband how to make work at all levels for all populations and social spheres. “For instance, with this group of paintings here,” Holly announced, grabbing a small silk-screen of Marilyn, “if you want a $50 piece, but let’s say you want four of them, I’ll make you a deal; things are always negotiable and [...]

Photos by Bryan Rindfuss Story by Desiree Prieto Dreams do come true. San Antonio native Mandi Gallegos featured her new Mikailee Alton Collection at the PLITZS New York City Fashion Week, “Designer Showcase Presentation,” in which only 36 emerging designers were chosen to participate. The event, showcased in Manhattan’s Fashion district, coincided with the official Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and allowed up-and-coming designers to affordably produce their presentation to industry professionals, investors, boutiques, buyers, and the media, among other interests. A personable woman with an infectious energy, Gallegos claims that while she’s returned to San Antonio, she still hasn’t awoken from her dream. With a large dimply smile, she enthusiastically explained, “Honestly, it still hasn’t hit me! Even during the show, I was like, ‘I’m here, right? Is this real? I’m not dreaming?’ I thought for sure I would’ve broken down and cried but it really was so fast and it turned out to be everything I thought it would be.” The dream began just a few weeks before the event, in mid-January, when Gallegos was “supposed to be taking a break,” or as much of a break as a single mother of three boys can take. “I don’t know how [...]

Photos by Bryan Rindfuss Story by Desiree Prieto Nicknamed, “Wildcard Cuellar” by Project Runway’s Tim Gunn, Agosto Cuellar brings Barrio-chic style to ambitious amateurs in the community, an inspiration from his former vintage re-sale boutique on South Alamo for fifteen years, Jive Refried. The class, titled, “Barrio Couture,” meets on Wednesdays from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., from February 29 – May 23 at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center located at 723 S. Brazos Street. I had the chance to learn more about the class as a student, and upon arrival I was immediately floored by the festive yellow walls of the studio, which also came equipped with supersized Dia de los Muertos puppets. Cuellar asserted that the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center is a community space, and also “used by other artists and other mediums like silk screening, printing and puppet making.” He also noted that every room at the center is different. “I think the room next door is a different color—that’s where they do the Folklorkico rehearsal.” Like a teacher’s pet, I arrived to class earlier than my classmates, and exclusively perused Cuellar’s racks, boxes and bins on a treasure hunt to create my next pair of earrings [...]

Story By Desiree Prieto Unless you’ve been living under a fashion rock, you’ve probably heard of American designer Chris Benz. He’s become pretty important in the fashion community—and at an early age too. Originally from Seattle, he went to New York’s prestigious Parsons School of Design at 17, and then worked for Marc Jacobs and J. Crew before launching his own ready-to-wear line in 2007. Among his classmates at Parsons, he studied with Jason Wu (the guy who is famous for designing one of Michelle Obama’s inauguration dresses, a white silk chiffon gown now displayed at the Smithsonian). Benz also went to school with Bradley Scott, another up-and-coming designer I had the opportunity to interview while in New York City for fashion week. During our interview, Scott informed me that Benz’s customer is more of a “fantasy customer,” as the price point for his lines tend to be just as loud and as outrageous as his colorful creations and pink hair. Benz’s Spring 2012 collection is really girlie, fun, retro, and a bit untamed—like me! Hopefully he’ll take a cue from Wu and design another collection just for Target so I can actually wear it. In the meantime, I’ll be [...]

Story By Desiree Prieto Street style photoshoot by Margaux Gonzalez at AWW Snap Photography I met with Sofia Davis, Personal Shopper and New York Fashion Week Stylist, who loves calling San Antonio, Texas her home. Sofia met me at one of my stylish offices around town, Officina de Starbucks on Stone Oak, to literally “talk shop”—talk shopping that is—about what-to-wear in the New Year. Sofia stresses you can create your own unique style by simply revamping your wardrobe with staples found in your closet. “Start with a clean palette; figure out what fits you best. Perhaps pick out two or three shirts you already own, and remember, you have to dress for your body type. There’s no limit, you can always be stylish no matter what your size or frame is.” It wasn’t too long before my colleagues at Starbucks began to wonder how they could update their uniforms as well, but Sofia and I noticed that the baristas are already doing some styling of their own: a fashion tactic called color blocking. With their staple green apron and black Polos, the Starbucks uniforms are the perfect example of this trend that doesn’t seem to be going away any time [...]

Like its name suggests, Latina Bella is intended for women with gold and olive skin tones. I had the opportunity to speak with the makeup company’s marketing department, who informed me that most makeup companies use rose and pink tones to create their foundations—which is fine if you’re skin is on the white side or if you’re in fact white. If you’re Latina, then you probably need a foundation that is created with gold and olive undertones instead. “Our makeup line is tailored to fit your look, not everyone else’s,” says their slogan. I decided to try most of the products they sell to decide for myself. This review is about what I love and what I’m leaving for you to decide. The foundation: Latina Bella’s cream-to-powder foundation is lightweight coverage. Sometimes foundation can create the caked-on old lady look, which sucks considering makeup should make you look like a more youthful, better you. I love Latina Bella’s cream-to-powder foundation because it doesn’t feel or look like I’m wearing anything at all. It evens out my skin tone, covers red spots and blemishes; like a good foundation should, but without the thick, “she’s wearing too much makeup” look. The bronzer: [...]

He was born and educated in Athens Greece and grew up in a country that started the roots of art, literature and politics. Sioulas learned the ancient technique of Etching and the Byzantine style that is so prominent in his creations. Over the past two decades, Konstantino has been creating unique and timeless jewelry for men and women, that unites the ancient influences of his Greek heritage, with Modern day expression. His meticulous attention to detail is reflected in the etchings on the back sides of each adornment. Every piece is individually crafted in Greece and requires numerous man hours. It is this painstaking craftsmanship that makes Konstantino’s jewelry treasured by all those who wear it. Konstantino treasures are available at Neiman Marcus.
