“Bring us the girl, and wash away the debt.” We are all guilty of the good we do not accomplish. Our sins, our faults, our mistakes—they are all reminders that we are, in the end, human. To carry such debts, be they mental, spiritual or physical, can be a driving force behind great change. What happens we our beliefs are challenged? Why do some of our grandest intentions often lead to the darkest of ambitions? There are so many questions, so many paths not taken in life that leave us wondering an endless list of what if’s Bioshock Infinite is not simply a video game. It is a prolific journey into the very fabric of our realities, while also exploring questions of the depth of love, faith, and loss. Beautiful, adaptive, provocative and deeply thoughtful, Infinite is a masterful game that marries brilliant storytelling with near perfect video game design. While it is difficult enough to create a sequel that exceeds its predecessor, Bioshock Infinite achieves something far more rare—It raises the bar for the future of video games. Booker Dewitt, a disgraced agent of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, is tasked with finding and delivering a girl named Elizabeth [...]

Dead Space 3 suffers, among a few other things, from an identity crisis. Amid another squadron of Necromorphs on the freezing (but gorgeous) surface of Tau Volantis, I found myself asking questions not unlike those pondered in the halls of a philosophy building–why are we here, where are we going, what is our ultimate purpose, and so on. That isn’t to say Dead Space 3 fails at being entertaining or falls short of furthering the mysterious lore of the Markers. Quite the opposite, DS3 is riddled with intense moments of firefights and some great exploratory elements that previous entries were desperately lacking. But at it’s core, Dead Space 3 tries to emulate its horror-born roots while highlighting its more modern action-shooter form, and in doing so it doesn’t quite succeed at either. Series protagonist Isaac Clarke returns to us bitter and broken, seemingly exhausted with trying to convince humanity the twisted truth of their fabled Markers. Unfortunately, Isaac is forced back into his trusty RIG suit when his former girlfriend, Ellie, is in a tough spot and sends a team to bring him in and help out. Together and with the help of co-op partner John Carver, they uncover evidence [...]

Among the growing pantheon of Mario titles, Paper Mario has always been a diamond in the rough of sorts. When viewed throughout his many iterations and forms, this paper-ized persona has come to represent his quirkiest, yet most dynamically unique adventures in many years. With excellent writing and a growing thirst to try new ideas and mechanics not known to the Mario Universe, it comes as no surprise that Paper Mario: Sticker Star by Intelligent Systems maintains its whimsical nature and sense of humor packed with jokes and an unwavering dogma certain to keep you smiling until the end. This is made all the more important, however, by a frustratingly picky battle system and a world progression theme almost perfectly imitating every other Mario game in existence that prevent you from having a truly joyful return to our silent paper comrade. The story setup is not unlike any other Mario tale; Princess Peach hosts a celebration in town, and Bowser barges in to ruin the fun and make a run at her. In the chaos, he grabs the fabled Sticker Star and breaks it into 6 pieces that scatter across the realm. Armed with new powers, Bowser runs off with [...]

There is merit to the notion that some stories are timeless: a wayward teen fulfilling a greater destiny, fathers and sons reconciling, age-long struggles between bitter enemies founded upon opposing ideals. They are tales we’ve heard before, yet time and again they persist through the years and reinvent themselves in untold fashions. In the Assassin’s Creed legacy, these themes are all utilized to craft a story thousands of years in play. What once started as a science-fiction experiment taking place in ancient history, Ubisoft has come a long way to evolve the AC titles into encyclopedic chapters telling a much grander story beyond itself. What began with Altair, Ezio improved, and with Assassin’s Creed 3 Connor aimed to perfect. Packed with the most robust amount of side quests, exploration and secrets among all titles, yet faltering on providing a strong final chapter to finish the history-jumping trilogy, Assassin’s Creed 3 is an ambitious evolution of the saga that nearly perfects game play and emotional impact. but fails to give Connor’s story a proper context (or finale) in Desmond’s present-day struggle. When it was revealed that AC 3 would take place during the American Revolution, many were worried that such a [...]

Tempering choice with narration is a tricky road in the gaming world. In many cases, developers must cater to one side more than the other in order to achieve the primary goals they set out to achieve–complete story, emotional weight, and satisfying gameplay are often the cited excuses for swaying one way more than the other. Rarely does a game manage to walk between both worlds carefully and with poise while at the same time delivering an original world that can draw the player into. Dishonored is a game of many features, and nearly all of them work together in a dark harmony to create a fascinating and wholly excellent game. On the surface, Dishonored is a tale of revenge. Corvo Attano, a bodyguard for a future empress, is framed for murder and is ultimately forced to become an assassin, driven by executing those who are truly to blame and exonerating himself. With the infusion of choice, however, the story delves into deeper territory about the morals of revenge versus mercy. Do corrupt men of power truly deserve death? What purpose does it serve to deal death to those responsible, and would it prevent someone else from succumbing to the [...]

It is no secret that our internet interests, tastes, and patterns are monitored. While market analysis researchers are bidding profusely for our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram data to better hone their own advertising strategies, the minds at Google have been utilizing their own data for years. A report published today from Google – titled “Understanding the Modern Gamer” – analyzes hundreds of millions of internet searches from 2010 and 2011 of the top 20 selling video games. The report looks at the type and frequency of internet search queries based on major video game releases during the months before, during, and after the game’s release. Moreover, the report also details what types of searches are most frequent at key intervals during a game’s cycle. In the months leading up to a game’s debut, “release date” is the most frequently used search entry, and “tips” becomes the most frequent during the month of release and those following. “DLC,” (downloadable content), however, does become the 2nd most popular query in the 3+ months following a game’s debut. Perhaps most interesting, however, is that according to their report, Google is able to predict with high accuracy the amount of units a game will [...]

In the hands of the bold a reinvention can either be very effective or very dangerous. Is redesigning a classic worth the risk of falling short or tarnishing the original? And what of the legions of fans who hold such games so near and dear? While many welcome HD updates of their favorite titles, others allege there’s sacrilege in meddling with something that was perfect to begin with. After nearly 14 years, Valve’s debut game Half-Life has remained a pinnacle of video game achievement. What began as a polished FPS game soon became a benchmark by which all future shooters would be measured by. When it was announced in 2005 that a team of volunteers and community developers would utilize Valve’s Source engine and completely redesign the iconic PC game, cries of joy were tempered with concerns that such a team might not pay proper respect to the original or even create a maligned experience that resonates Half-Life in name only. Seven years since then, such fears have been put firmly to rest as Black Mesa is a masterful culmination of tribute, precision, and design that pays proper homage to Half-Life while adding a dash of gameplay ingenuity that strengthens [...]

First, it was about an alien named Frank and his weird, amorphous creature-buddy called the Maw. Then it was about an escaped science experiment who could make himself explode over and over again. From comic-jumping heroes to resurrected gun-fighters looking for revenge on the posse that killed him, the minds at Twisted Pixel have made a name for themselves with quirky, out-of-left-field stories and characters that all have just a touch of charm. And it has payed off, as the minds at Twisted Pixel are currently developing their sixth Xbox Live Arcade release, titled LocoCycle. “Like most of our game ideas, it came from the mind of our Creative Director, Josh Bear” says Jay Stuckwisch in an interview. LocoCycle came to Bear after watching the movie Torque, a mediocre movie about underground motorcycle gangs and racers. “Josh woke up thinking about making a whole game based on dueling motorcycles. He came into the office the next day and told the crew, ‘We are making a game about fighting motorcycles.’” And from there, the team was off and running. Featuring several elements from action, fighting and racing games, LocoCycle is about an experimental sentient bike I.R.I.S. capable of far more than [...]

Stagnation is no friend to the game industry. No matter how great the brand or how long the lineage, games must evolve with the turn of each new season. Leaps in technology and graphical prowess are usually to blame for this, as the gamer community demands more and more from each $60 venture. But there are occasions when, despite consistent acclaim or a legacy of iconic characters and grand narratives, an industry staple must begin to move beyond the scope they are familiar with and dabble in new tastes that can breathe new life into an otherwise exhausted mine of golden memories. Final Fantasy is easily one of the most important and memorable franchises in the entire video game world, and Square Enix (formerly Squaresoft) has been responsible for some of the greatest video game characters in history, yet even the FF series is no stranger to the path less traveled. It is this curiosity that birthed cult favorites like Kingdom Hearts or Final Fantasy Tactics, and now Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy can count itself among other successful hybrids by blending RPG elements and customization with the unlikely music rhythm play style, ala Guitar Hero or Rock Band. Having accumulated 14 [...]

Stay a while and listen!! I know it’s been a while, and for that I cannot apologize enough. I’m sure a bunch of you out there have been knee deep in Diablo 3 like myself. Thankfully, I was able to pull myself away and make this post about the radio show I was on last week! The Computer America Radio Show with Craig Crossman is a nationally syndicated radio show, and the 2nd Tuesday of each month is Gamer Tuesday, for which I am now their official video game correspondent! That’s right people, I get a nation-sized amp to talk about video games once a month. So why not check it out? Have it on in the background while you game, read, go to the bathroom, on the road, wherever! This month we go indepth with Diablo 3 and recap the bigger announcements at E3 this year. Here is the first hour, followed by the 2nd hour: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/60252603/computeramerica%206.12.12%20hour%201.mp3 https://dl.dropbox.com/u/60252603/computeramerica%206.12.12%20hour%202.mp3 See you in the next level, Gray

***Author’s Note: I chose to keep the review separate from the left-handed issue, which I will address at the end of the article. If you are left-handed as I am, be sure to read that section closely before buying this game.*** How many of you remember Pit? I can say with complete honesty that before Super Smash Bros. Brawl came out back in 2008, I never knew of him. As it turns out, the last time Pit was around was all the way back in 1986 on the NES in his first game ever, Kid Icarus. Well, someone in the big Nintendo family finally decided to get around to making a a sequel, but not any ol’ run of the mill sequel. In fact, Kid Icarus: Uprising is so vastly different from the original game that I wouldn’t even call it a sequel at all. Blending on-rail shooting elements familiar to Star Fox fans with a very cool, customizable on-the-ground fighting system, Uprising is a refreshingly unique and awesome 3DS game that boasts some of the best use of the portable console’s 3D graphics. As a loyal servant to his goddess Palutena, Pit is an angel that is tasked with [...]

This past month, I was invited to be a video game correspondent on the Computer America Radio Show with Craig Crossman. It is the nation’s longest running nationally syndicated computer and technology radio show, and the 2nd Tuesday of each month is “gamer Tuesday.” Each month, I will appear on their show and we will discuss current video game trends, news and reviews, as well as take questions from any listener courageous enough to call in. After some tinkering, I have found the ability to post the links to the show, which is cut into two hour-long segments.
The Nintendo 3DS may not have had the the best launch in gaming history, but Nintendo has been quick to bolster their sales despite posting record losses. The famous plumber might have missed day 1 of their new portable, but Super Mario 3D Land did well to hit the shelves soon after. Intermingling elements from some of the most famous entries, Mario 3D is another solid, yet exhausted entry in the Mario legacy. If you have played a Mario game before, chances are you can guess the main plot. After Bowser captures Princess, Mario must plow through eight worlds of Hammer Bros, Goombas and Koopa Troopers to get her back. The raccoon tail power-up long absent from the series returns to Mario’s arsenal in a reduced form, in that Mario is not able to fly. Also introduced is a suit that bestows on Mario the ability to throw boomerangs at his opponents, giving players a small feeling of revenge against the Hammer Bros’ players have wasted countless mushrooms trying to defeat. The enemies aren’t always without means of fighting back, however, as they eventually begin to come with their own raccoon tails to add a fresh turn on their usual [...]

Two years ago, London-based Rocksteady Studios decided to match the superhero standard set by director Christopher Nolan by giving the world a video game worthy of comparison to his now-legendary The Dark Knight. Batman: Arkham Asylum delivered a true knockout video game experience in 2009, but having now completed its sequel I am happy to report that Rocksteady was just getting warmed up. Perfecting the balance of icon, detective, and warrior, Arkham City is undoubtedly the greatest Batman—and quite possibly superhero—game of all time. In order to let their Batman truly spread his wings (see what I did there?), Arkham City moves the Caped Crusader from tight corridors and the haunting asylum to Gotham itself. Batman’s playground isn’t just big; it’ massive. Arkham City is a virtual Escape from L.A. setting in which Gotham’s worst criminals are shoved into a portion of the city barricaded off from the rest of the world, separate from mercy and law. Icons of evil such as the Penguin, Mr. Freeze, and the Joker have come to call this turf home, and it is where Batman must enter and uncover a grand scheme that puts Heath Ledger’s Joker ideas to shame. The stakes are at [...]

If you’re one of the many FPS fans out there and you don’t know who id Software is, then I highly suggest opening up Wikipedia and giving yourself a quick history lesson. Won’t take long… … You back? Good. So, id Software set the standard for FPS back in the early ’90s with some huge hits like Wolfenstein and Doom. Their last foray, however, was way back in 2004 with Doom 3, just before Valve changed the game with Half-Life 2. In the years since, there’s been a lot of progress made by other studios and id was still quiet on what they had planned. When Rage was first shown at E3 in 2009, much of the older gaming community started salivating at the thought of the ol’ FPS champs coming back to the genre they made famous and showing the rest of the industry how it’s done. What kinds of innovation did they have in store for us? New control scheme? Dynamic story-telling and plot development? Revamped AI or new combat mechanics? None of these, actually. As it turns out, Rage is a very polished, very tight, very status-quo shooter that entertains without innovating. Now I don’t want to convey the [...]
