Two weeks ago, the Current’s resident beer reviewer Travis E. Poling let you know about the Rally For Texas Beer Freedom happening this Friday, February 25 at Main Plaza (115 N Main Street) in front of San Fernando Cathedral. You can check out Travis’ full Bottle & Tap column from the February 16-22 issue here. By now, most of you know that HB 660, if passed, will allow you to buy beer produced by brewpubs at your neighborhood restaurant, bar, and/or grocery store. The Current’s thirsty, and we’re ready to fight for our right to drink delicious Texas beers (like Freetail’s Buffalo Hump 1840 IPA or Blue Star Brewery’s Smoke Dark Ale) wherever and whenever we want to! Additional details about the rally have emerged since Travis published his column, however, so we’re here to bring you up to speed. As previously mentioned, San Antonio Representative Mike Villarreal will speak about HB 660 and its importance to Texas’ craft beer industry. In addition, those participating in the rally can sample beer made at neighboring Texas brewpubs from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and enjoy free music by Michael Martin & The Infidels from 7-10 p.m. Don’t miss it!

Two weekends ago, I trekked up I-35 with friends for a solid Saturday night of face-melting metal at Emo’s in Austin. Though I have plenty of ways to get my metal fix in San Antonio, we wanted to check out Times Of Grace, the new project that reunites current Killswitch Engage guitarist/producer Adam Dutkiewicz with KsE’s original lead vocalist Jesse Leach. Times of Grace’s lineup is a throwback to KsE’s Alive or Just Breathing era — Joel Stroetzel is the touring guitarist for TOG right now, so they’re only missing two members from 2002. That said, the band stuck to new material off their notable recent debut, The Hymn of a Broken Man, rather than rehashing old AJOB songs. And it served them well. Though TOG isn’t the focus of this post, their live show was one of the best I’ve seen so far in 2011 and I’ll be keeping tabs on them. About an hour before TOG took the outside stage at Emo’s, we headed to the inside bar to supplement our beers with a Black Tooth apiece. We were immediately sucked in by Legion, a young thrash metal outfit from Houston. Their racing twin guitar attack and clean [...]

This week, I put my mouthguard in to chat up Broken Teeth frontman Jason McMaster in advance of the Austin-based band’s Friday gig at Nightrocker Live. Broken Teeth skull-stomp the line between heavy metal and high-voltage Texas rock ’n’ roll — think old-school AC/DC-style riff rock with the swagger and explosive live show to match. The band spit out a new album last year (their fifth), but McMaster is also well known for disturbing the peace with progressive metal pioneers Watchtower and hard rocking, gold-certified Dangerous Toys in years past. Below, the Texas metal legend dishes on his upcoming induction into the South Texas Music Walk of Fame, getting Canadian rocker Danko Jones to guest on Viva La Rock, Fantastico!, and his new SA-based thrash metal project, Evil United. Broken Teeth w/Martyrhead, Fri Jan 7, Nightrocker Live, 605 San Pedro, (210) 265-3573, call for cover charge. I heard you’re being inducted into the South Texas Music Walk of Fame in your hometown Corpus in June 2011. You’re also the first metal artist they’ve ever honored. What does this mean to you? Being recognized in your hometown for anything is always special. The nominations came in worldwide, but started on a [...]

You’ve definitely heard of Toys for Tots — but how about Tats for Tots? Yeah, we know the tagline is a little odd at first glance, but Flesh Electric Tattoo is utilizing their platform to give back this holiday season. The Northside shop has decided to donate 100-percent of their proceeds from Saturday, December 18th to The Children’s Shelter in San Antonio. So if you’ve been thinking about getting some new ink, Saturday is your lucky day. “A lot of tattoo artists are primarily concerned with winning trophies,” said Flesh Electric Owner Jacob Valdez. “But this year, we want to help put presents under the tree for needy families. We’ve all gotten help from others at some point. As small business owners, we need to give back.” The shop has 150 small designs that are über cheap ($15 minimum donation each!) and ready to go for Saturday. Of course, artists will gladly do custom work as well. The shop is encouraging cash on that day to avoid credit card fees, but they will be donating 100-percent of all money that comes in. Flesh Electric, 502 Embassy Oaks, is located a few doors down from Oasis Lounge and Wiseguys in the [...]

Thanksgiving weekend was the perfect time to check out Evil Olive Elixir Lounge, the new bar/diner that just opened on Thousand Oaks and Jones Maltsberger. Although Evil Olive occupies the former site of Jack’s Patio Bar, the interior has been completely redone and is markedly spacious. Doors officially opened on the ever-popular bar night of Thanksgiving Eve, and word had gotten around by the time we dropped in on Friday.

As if you didn’t already know it, Stone Oak, you’re officially on the grid. Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has just opened a third location in SA, and you’re the newest recipient of its specialty screenings, full dinner menu, and extensive beer selection. Located off 281 just North of Stone Oak Parkway, the new location will feature six screens, 800 total seats, digital projection, and stadium seating. The largest theater will have 200 seats. Alamo Stone Oak opens Friday, November 5, and opening weekend screenings include For Colored Girls, Due Date, and Megamind. Specialty screenings of Julie and Julia (November 11), The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly (November 30), and The Life Aquatic (November 23) are also listed. And if you want to guarantee your seat on the Hogwarts Express, pre-sale tickets are available for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. Facebook wants to keep you on the grid while you’re at the theater too. Alamo Drafthouse garnered some national attention this week, listed as one of close to two dozen initial partners in a “Deals” initiative launched by Facebook on Wednesday. According to Omar L. Gallaga’s blog on austin360.com, Facebook hopes to create an incentive for users to “check [...]

This week could be your last chance to catch a glimpse of the bats that take flight nightly near I-35 and Camden in downtown San Antonio. Due largely to word of mouth and a few segments on WOAI, the bats drew a considerable crowd near the new River Walk expansion this summer. Onlookers frequently lined the Camden Street bridge to watch thousands of them congregate and fly out at dusk each evening. A knowledgeable friend informed me that these are Mexican free-tailed bats, which make their home in Bracken Bat Cave just outside of San Antonio. Apparently, Bracken houses a colony of over 20 million bats, making it the site of the species’ largest colony. According to the Bat Conservation International website, Batcon.org, Bracken Bat Cave is open for tours on select nights to BCI members who sign up on a first come, first serve basis. Even though I’m not a member (yet), I contacted administrators at Bracken in hopes of attending their last scheduled tour of the year this Saturday, October 9. If I’m allowed to attend, I’ll post a blog here detailing my experience. Despite SA’s recent drop in temperature — which I’m not complaining about by any [...]

West (Cult to Follow, Pitbull Daycare) is filling in behind the kit for shows in Spain and the UK with Bach — the band will serve as direct support for Guns N’ Roses on several dates. This isn’t the first time West has played for Bach either (see “True West,”August 15, 2007). Below, West discusses the upcoming tour, highlights from the 2007 run, and meeting Axl Rose. Check out the entire tour schedule at Sebastian Bach’s website. Remind us how you ended up playing with Bach the first time around, in 2007? My friend Johnny Chromatic called me up. I was at my singer Stephen Bishop’s house, and I actually got the call on Thanksgiving. I’d always been friends with Johnny, Bach’s guitar player, and he called to say that they needed me to fill in for a tour. How much time did you have to prepare? It was really short notice. The good thing is that I knew a lot of the Skid Row songs because I was a huge Skid Row fan! I listened to them all the time back in the [...]
