Austin-based Bamako Airlines has just released their self-titled EP —an engaging collection of mostly solid AfroPop covers from Algeria, Madagascar, Ethiopia, and Mali. What I’m really looking forward to is their next album, which reportedly will be more centered on their promising originals (listen to Bamako Airlines’ “Desséché” for clues). Singer Meera Chandy, trumpeter Brian Carr, guitarists Chris Vestre and Michael Goldsmith, drummer David Justh, Sexto Sol bassist Greg Goodman, plus guest Eddie Lehwald on trombone (cross your fingers that they can also bring Guinea percussionist Aboubacar Sylla, who recorded on the album) are at their best in a live setting, and cozy Carmens is perfect for them — you could do a lot worse than having a sangría while Bamako Airlines is all over your ass. $10, 8:30pm Saturday, Carmens de la Calle, 720 E Mistletoe, (210) 737-8272, carmensdelacalle.com.
The Iron Rattler is no joke. This ridiculous new hybrid coaster (made of both wood and steel) opens to season pass holders this weekend and then to the public on Saturday, May 25. The Rattler is the world’s steepest and fastest hybrid coaster, boasting a terrifying/awesome 81-degree fall from a height of 180-feet, so be sure to save the selfies for another ride. The Rattler also features a looping zero-gravity barrel roll, four over banked turns, a scary little upside down stint, and hits up to 70 miles per hour. Check out the video below:

With music by Duncan Sheik (best remembered for his 1996 single “Barely Breathing”), this provocative musical combines a sexy book with even sexier, alt-rock based songs like “The Bitch of Living,” “Touch Me,” and “Totally Fucked.” Unlike a lot of musical theater, this isn’t a safe bet for a first date or a matinee with mom. The story follows a group of Teutonic teens frustrated by their 19th-century village’s refusal to acknowledge S-E-X. Left to their own devices, they explore masturbation and sexual fantasies, but shit gets real, fast, and sadomasochism, an act of ambiguous consent, and physical and sexual abuse all occur before intermission. The second act grows darker still. The powerful message and the rollicking soundtrack propelled Spring Awakening to a 2007 Tony Award sweep. $10-$25, 8pm Fri-Sat, 2:30 Sun, The Playhouse, 800 W Ashby, (210) 733-7258, theplayhousesa.org.
If you, a Spurs fan, were told that Tim Duncan sat on the bench during the final four minutes, that Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker combined to shoot 4-22 from the field, and that the Spurs were playing a Game 6 against a desperate–and supremely talented–team in one of the most hostile road arenas in the NBA, what would you figure the result of that game was? A 20-point loss, perhaps? No, how about a 12-point win, keyed by Brazilian Wax (Tiago Splitter) and Flabby Frenchman (Boris Diaw), to advance to the Western Conference Finals against the Memphis Grizzlies in a series which begins Sunday. Duncan didn’t play badly. In fact, for much of the game, he, Kawhi Leonard (the Spurs’ MVP in this series) and Splitter were the only reliable sources of points for the Spurs. But down the stretch, Duncan made a wildly errant pass, and Pop sat him on the pine like the rookie he isn’t. Had Kobe Bryant been suddenly benched in a tight Game 6, you can bet he would have walked to the scorer’s table himself and punched his coach if he tried to stop him. Yet while Duncan looked a little dumbfounded, he took [...]

If San Antonio is the mecca of conjunto, then the Tejano Conjunto Festival serves as the genre’s hajj — a chance to pay homage to accomplished bands and musicians, bask in the energy of fresh talent, and, mostly, shuffle to the squeezeboxes. The TCF is oomping through its third decade of existence, and this year’s theme aims to recognize the generational transcendence of the genre with the motto Conjunto: Música, Familia, y Tradición. Thursday’s “New Directions in Conjunto Music” showcases younger musicians pushing the conjunto envelope. East L.A. sensation Los Fabulocos headline the experimentalist night, but local prodigy and Esteban “Steve” Jordan protégé Juanito Castillo could steal the show. “I’m taking old traditional accordion standards and reworking them into different time signatures, so it’s going to be something different, something weird,” says Castillo, who formed Juanito Castillo and the Psycho Trip Band specifically for this gig. “It’s a 45-minute set and I’ll be joined by some surprise friends. For those 45 minutes you’re going to transport to outer space.” Also on the bill: Thoze Guyz (Roscoe) and SA’s own Los Nahuatlatos. $10-$12, 7-11pm Thursday, Guadalupe Theater, 1301 Guadalupe, (210) 271-3151, guadalupeculturalarts.org.
Last July, GEO Care, a wholly owned subsidiary of the private prison behemoth GEO Group, submitted a proposal to the Texas Department of State Health Services to privatize the Kerrville State Hospital, where hundreds of criminal defendants deemed mentally incompetent are sent for treatment each year. To the delight of government watchdogs and prison reform groups, Texas ultimately rejected GEO’s proposal last October, with DSHS Commissioner David Lakey writing in his assessment that GEO’s plan “would put both our patients and the State of Texas at risk.” Naturally, we, along with the Texas Tribune and the Texas Observer, wanted to see what that proposal looked like. And, naturally, GEO’s lawyers objected to those public information requests, seeking to withhold portions it deemed “trade secrets” or other information the company claimed would cost it a competitive edge if released. The Texas Attorney General’s Office last year sided with us, the press, and told GEO to turn over the records, saying the company “failed to demonstrate how the information at issue meets the definition of a trade secret,” among other things. GEO sued the AG’s office on October 26, 2012, trying to keep those portions of its Kerrville proposal secret. And last [...]

Introducing a weekly opinion column about vaginas, penises, and everything in between. Why yes, there is some sand in my vagina. It is actually irritating me and I need to address it, so hold on, here we go… Vagina. There, I said it. Vagina, vagina, vagina. I have a vagina. Y’all, my mom has a vagina. Your mom does, too. Vaginas are included in approximately half the bodies on the planet. And yet, the word, a medical term, still holds some kind of bizarre polarizing power. How else to explain the recent uproar over Mike Seely’s post in which he called San Antonio Spurs player Tiago Splitter a walking vagina, essentially? Since this is an opinion column, let me state my own and say that I wasn’t a fan of that metaphor, and I did not approve the blog prior to its posting. Not because it was gross; if forced to choose, I would rather envision a giant walking vagina over a giant walking nutsack any day. I didn’t like it because it was a lazy way to insinuate that Splitter was weak, “nearly sleeping,” and incompetent. For what else are vaginas, and the women attached to them, other than [...]

Few times has the Teatro Guadalupe been as packed as it was in the morning of May 15, when the United States Postal Service and the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center headed by Patty Ortiz hosted the First-Day-Of-Issue Ceremony of the Lydia Mendoza Commemorative stamp launched by the USPS. The ceremony was emceed by actor Jesse Borrego and featured performances by the Sidney Lanier High School Band (National Anthem), speeches by Guadalupe Executive Director Patty Ortiz and Marie Therese Domínguez (the USPS’ Vice President, Government Relations and Public Policy) and music by accordionist Eva Ybarra and singer Rita Vidaurri. But Rita Vidaurri, “La Calandria,” stole the show. After a heartfelt rendition of the classic ranchera “De qué manera te olvido” (“How Can I Forget You,” composed by Federico Méndez Tejeda and immortalized by hundreds of stars from Vicente Fernández to Luis Miguel) she asked (in Spanish) if the audience “wanted to hear a joke.” She told not one, but two R-rated ones, but don’t fast-forward: listen to the song first. Ok, here’s the jokes: There was a little female chihuahua covered by fleas, and an old lady tells the owner: “Just rub gasoline on her, and the fleas will go away.” [...]

Chinese-Canadian director Yung Chang (Up the Yangtze, China Heavyweight) spent two years following fruit-obsessed horticulturalists, pomologists, and backyard enthusiasts to create The Fruit Hunters, a documentary inspired by Adam Leith-Gollner’s book The Fruit Hunters: A Story Of Nature, Adventure, Commerce And Obsession. In his cinematic odyssey around the world, Chang explores how intertwined we are with fruit via encounters with the likes of actor Bill Pullman, whose Hollywood Hills backyard boasts an orchard with more than 100 fruiting plants; Juan Fernando Aguilar, a Honduran breeder searching for a replacement for the Cavendish banana; and “fruit detective” Isabella Dalla Ragione, whose Umbrian orchard of forgotten fruit harbors varieties discovered by analyzing paintings from the Renaissance era. In his director’s statement, Chang suggests, “You may want to have a bowl of fresh fruit in arm’s reach. The filmmakers are not responsible for any hunger pangs that may result from viewing.” Alamo Drafthouse screens the 2012 film as part of its 2013 Docurama Slate. $9.50, 7:30pm Wednesday, Alamo Drafthouse Westlakes, 1255 SW Loop 410, (210) 677-8500, drafthouse.com.
Have you ever seen a vagina walk down the street? Not in the midsection of a woman, but an entire human who’s made entirely of vaginal matter? If you haven’t, just watch a Spurs game and, in particular, watch Tiago Splitter. Oh, the Spurs won Tuesday night, rather easily (109-91), because they had to, but no thanks to Tiago. His stats don’t really tell the story. If you glimpse at his steals total, you might mistake him for Mike Conley. But, rest assured, those were balls thrown directly in his direction that he’d have to have been sleeping to not catch. And he was nearly sleeping. Splitter masqueraded as a competent role player during the regular season, but once things get serious, he’s not. When he gets a post opportunity at point-blank range, the shot inevitably gets stripped down low, Karl Malone-stye. And when he’s on defense, he makes Carl Landry look like Charles Barkley. The Spurs, who mauled the “greatest shooting backcourt ever” Tuesday night, aren’t out of the weeds in this series. In fact, no one should be surprised if they dump Game 6 at Golden State. Their odds of advancing, however, are quite good. Awaiting them, short [...]

A mistake by law enforcement put Miguel Montanez inches away from death. Driving to his job at a metal shop in the early morning hours last July, a Hays County SWAT truck rammed the front of his BMW. Montanez dove to the floorboards when bullets began flying through his windshield. When Montanez emerged from the car, authorities realized they had the wrong guy, according to a federal lawsuit filed in San Antonio Tuesday. Montanez turned up clean for warrants and had no criminal history. And just like that, without explanation or apology, Hays County sheriff’s deputies and San Marcos police officers released Montanez, according to the lawsuit, which names the City of San Marcos, the Hays County Sheriff’s Office and several unnamed deputies as defendants. “It’s really crazy,” said Montanez’s Austin-based lawyer Adam Loewy. “My guy is a good guy. He was literally just driving to work.” Loewy contends officers were looking for Montanez’s brother, who had reportedly violated a protective order by threatening an ex. “It was still nothing on the level that would require a SWAT team to come out and perform a Schwarzenegger-like raid,” Loewy said. The lawsuit claims Montanez suffered a serious back injury during [...]

While I’m still a little skeptical about Baz Luhrmann’s 3D film based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel, The Great Gatsby, this 8-bit video game modeled after Jay Gatsby’s life is one adaptation I have no qualms about diving into. The Great Gatsby For NES has been around since February 2011, and consists of narrator extraordinaire Nick Carraway tearing through four rip-roaring levels of shooting martini-carrying waiters in Gatsby’s mansion, weaving through the ghosts of beached soldiers, an encounter with Owl Eyes, a weird ass showdown with the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg, a sad, sobby Daisy Buchanan, a smoky New York speakeasy mission and much more. Created by Charlie Hoey and Peter Malamud Smith, The Great Gatsby For NES ends with a chance to finally snag that iconic green light. If you fail, however, you’ll receive a fitting ”Game over, old sport!” as consolation. Have you seen Luhrmann’s film? What did you think?

Look out, San Antonio, Culinaria 2013 is upon us. It’s time to put on your party pants. Maybe the stretchy ones with an elastic waistband. Culinaria highlights expert local, regional, international chefs through a series of tasty events, in an effort to promote San Antonio as a leading destination for food and wine and to enrich the culinary community. From May 15 to 19, the city finds itself besieged with countless tempting opportunities to eat and drink like kings. With swanky wine dinners, high-end tequila tastings, and food-centric parties at every turn, you’d better have the bank account of a king, too. Right? Wrong. This year, avail yourself of the more affordable options (there are several!) and worry about the bathroom scale implications later. On the evening of Thursday, May 16, from 6 to 9 p.m., food trucks from around the city will converge upon the H-E-B Alon Market (8053 NW Military Hwy) for a relaxed and family-friendly mobile meal extravaganza. Tickets to the Food Truck Competition cost $10 in advance ($25 that day) and include beer, wine, and water. Look for the DUK Truck, Where Y’at, Singh’s Vietnamese, Sabor Colombiano, Say.She.Ate, Dillion’s Famous Louisiana Hot Dogs, and Crepe Nation, [...]

For the last 16 years, students at the North East School of the Arts have been creating and screening their shorts, chosen by their peers, at the 800 lb. Film Festival. The faculty and staff of NESA’s cinema department train students through all aspects of a movie’s production, even traveling to Los Angeles to film on location, like last year’s short Ordinance of Good Men, written and directed by Cinema North East alum Devin Woodard. The drama, which was chosen to screen in the Young Filmmakers category during last year’s Austin Film Festival, is about a group of bounty hunters intent on murdering an alleged terrorist in The Beverly Hills Hotel for their Charlie’s Angels-like boss. The group soon discovers they have been duped and must take an I Heart Huckabees moment to figure out their purpose in life. Existential angst continues in Hamartia, written and co-directed by Cinema North East senior Cristian Perez and former San Antonian Jaida Scott. The mute protagonist’s “fatal flaw” (the definition of the movie’s title) may be more her desire to feel accepted in a world filled with confusion, doubt and uncertainty, than the tumor that’s growing on a frontal lobe in her brain.
Last week, with much of City Council stuck in campaign season crunch time, downtown Council member Diego Bernal sought to deliver on a promise he made to the LGBT community nearly two years ago. Bernal, who went uncontested in Saturday’s election, met with members of CAUSA , a coalition of local LGBT rights groups (including the Stonewall Democrats, Get Equal, Equality Texas, Metropolitan Community Church, the LGBT Chamber of Commerce, and others) at the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center Tuesday night, announcing plans to finally strengthen local protections for San Antonio’s LGBT community. For two years CAUSA has pushed Bernal and Mayor Julian Castro to update portions of city code that cover nondiscrimination in the hiring and firing of city employees, public accommodations, fair housing, the awarding of city contracts and the appointment of city board and commission members. As it stands, LGBT citizens aren’t protected anywhere in the city’s non-discrimination language. Both Castro and Bernal have long voiced support for adding “sexual orientation and gender identity” as protected groups. CAUSA expected the burden of filing a Council Consideration Request, the vehicle by which proposed ordinances make their way to a full Council hearing, would fall on Bernal’s shoulders.
El Valiente, Piñata Protest’s brand new recording, officially comes out May 21, but you don’t have to wait that long — it has been streaming since May 12 on NPR’s First Listen. The nine-song EP includes Piñata-styled conjunto-norteño-punk covers of immortal classics like “Volver, Volver” and “La Cucaracha,” plus new hits like “Vato Perrón.” Produced in Austin by Chris “Frenchie” Smith, it was recorded in three days (“and the first one was setting up,” said drummer J.J. Martínez) and was jointly released by SA’s Saustex Media (physical) and LA’s Cósmica Records (digital and Latin market, including Mexico). It is also the first album with Faith Radle (Girl in a Coma) as manager. “This is the best lineup we’ve ever had, and probably the last,” singer/accordionist Álvaro del Norte told the Current. “This time, everybody is solid and everyone wants the same thing.” Besides del Norte and Martínez, the band now has brothers Matt and Marcus Cazares on guitar and bass, respectively. The band will present the album with a show at White Rabbit on May 24, headlining a bill that includes Los Diferentes del Norte and Nada Más Basura. Look for the Piñata Protest feature in next week’s Current.

Hi, my name is Bryan De La Garza (everyone calls me Brain) and I’m a photographer here in San Antonio. There are still a lot of photographers that shoot film, and I’m one them. I have always wanted to do a photoblog where only analog photographs were shown and can still be beautiful. For me, using film cameras is a process of slowing down and focusing on what is happening around me. So hopefully this little series will catch on and you will like the stories and photos that I post. First Friday Acoustic Night at J &O’s Cantina, May 3rd, 2013 Tired of the same First Friday Blue Star thing, I was excited to hear of an acoustic show happening at J and O’s Cantina. I had never heard of or been to this place, so immediately I wanted to check it out. J and O’s is located at 1014 S. Presa Street next to Taco Haven. It’s a small bar with a max occupancy of 43, which made it a perfect location for an acoustic set. Plus, I wouldn’t be going to bed with ringing ears because I forgot my earplugs. The music was supposed to start at [...]

For every angry letter, online petition, or sofa rant spilled over a cancelled show, one thing is true: the reason many viewers’ favorite bits of home cinema disappear, is because they aren’t Mad Men. With recent news of network and cable’s cancellations and re-ups for next season, it comes as no surprise that Mad Men will be back, and why shouldn’t it? Mad Men’s trophy count would put Kobe Bryant to shame. Racking up near countless nods, it’s won handfuls of metal from the Emmy’s, Golden Globes, and AFI, to name a few. It even won a Peabody Award. Matthew Weiner’s brainchild has earned the prestige that few series today, or in television history, can claim. We may feel like we’re being told to go kick rocks over cancellations of such programs as Arrested Development, Freaks and Geeks, and Bored to Death, but there’s always hope for a second chance, or at least a new series, to let us down. These audience favorites are always canned by reason of insanity, also known as Nielsen ratings. You may know the drill. A randomly selected family (some 20,000 households to be exact) is given a box that records watching, recording, even fast-forwarding [...]
