Mange is nothing to lose hair over…for long. The first sign of mange in a dog or cat is hair loss, usually around the ears and face. Mange can be diagnosed with a simple skin scrape. It is treatable with topical ointment and can take between 4 weeks to a few months for your pets hair to grow back. There are two types of mange: Demodex, which is non-contagious and Sarcoptes which can be spread to animals and humans without simple precautions but is non-contagious after three weeks of treatment. If left untreated in pets, mange can lead to a painful and unnecessary death, especially in shelters where they euthanize homeless pets with simple medical conditions. San Antonio Pets Alive! is one of the few rescues that take in, treat and successfully find foster and forever homes for dogs and cats with mange. Beauty isn’t just skin deep. Don’t overlook rescuing a pet because it has a temporary case of mange.

briggsMeet Briggs!
Briggs is a 2 month old Rottweiler mix puppy with Sarcoptic mange. Since his treatment is in progress, Briggs is now non-contagious! He has an upper respiratory infection (aka bad cold) that he is being treated for and his eye sight may never be 100% because of a previous eye infection, but did that stop Ray Charles? Briggs is a sweet little puppy with so much love to give. He will flourish in a loving foster and forever home. Briggs is excited about meeting you so come on down to the SAPA! kennels for puppy kisses & wiggles!

Our Dog of the week, Aries, just needs some TLC and to beef up a bit! Aries #A230852 is the large dog spotlight! He is a 9 month old small statured lab mix and weighs approx 25-30 lbs. He is a sweet, playful, boy and appears to be good with other dogs. He is a bit skinny and could use some TLC. We are feeding him puppy food several times daily now to try and get some weight on him. http://bit.ly/140Mjov

We fostered a Weimaraner Lab mix with demondex mange. Ramp had some hair loss on his face, ears and back. We took him to the SAPA! clinic for treatments once a month for two months. We noticed it started to clear up after the first treatment. His coat is shiny and glistening now and he found his forever home last week. Mange was no problemo!
