Pick of the Day: Una Noche de la Gloria

October 13, 2012

una noche de la gloria
Like many of the most buzzed-about happenings in the the co-mingling art and fashion worlds, Una Noche de la Gloria: Contemporary Art in the Cultural Zone delivers a not-to-be-missed evening of multi-media mayhem. But the four-year-old event breaks the mold as a free celebration that’s open to all. Presented by the Contemporary Art and Literature Organization, la Gloria is anchored by Estilo Street, a genre-spanning designer showcase that gives Fashion Week San Antonio some big stilettos to fill. Playing out on an outdoor catwalk that uses the Guadalupe Theater as a backdrop, the runway show fuses cutting-edge concepts and DIY charm into a hyper-local fashion spectacle featuring local designers including Mary Alice Medina (above), John McBurney, Agosto Cuellar, Elizabeth Hernandez, Sarah Castillo, Josue Pacheco, Dave Reyes, and Dino Fox. But Estilo Street is but one of La Gloria’s sprawling components. El Museo del Barrio (in Progreso Hall) and Avenida Caballete de Pintura (in Las Oficinas) collectively showcase upwards of 50 visual artists while another 11 turn the corner of Brazos and Guadalupe into a pop-up gallery, taking over the trunks of lowriders for “Pop Yo Trunk — The Resurrection.” Look and listen for poets and musicians on the Blah Blah Blah Jazz Stage, gritty garage jams from Strumgerwer, Cut Throat, Danza Azteca, The Miracle Dolls, and Scum Allegiance on Linda’s Mexican Restaurant Street Stage, Fresh Ink Poets at Guadalupe Coffee House, the illustration and design collective Visual Pulp in the Guadalupe Theater’s Velador Garden, the Black Light Contingent in the Avenida Guadalupe Parking Lot, an Haute Bazaar at the entrance to Plaza Guadalupe, and live music courtesy of Bombasta, Roger Velasquez Group, Jai Roots, and Los Flamencos de San Antonio on CALO’s Heroes de la Gloria Stage. Free; 6pm-midnight Sat, Oct 13; corner of Brazos and Guadalupe; gqvelasquez.com. Check out our full online calendar of upcoming events here: calendar.sacurrent.com.
