Oppositional currents in 20th-century art converge in â€śReal/Surreal: Selections from the Whitney Museum of American Art.â€ť Second in a series aimed at reassessing the Whitneyâ€™s permanent collection, the exhibition assembles works by Edward Hopper, Man Ray, Joseph Cornell, Yves Tanguy, Charles Burchfield, Paul Cadmus, Philip Guston, Ben Shahn, Charles Sheeler, George Tooker, and Andrew Wyeth in a fashion The New York Times likened to â€śvisiting your grandmotherâ€™s attic and finding it loaded with forgotten treasures.â€ť With Jared Frenchâ€™s State Park among its examples, â€śReal/Surrealâ€ť visits bizarre worlds and finds an odd common ground between the imagined and the observed.
