Texas Biennial: Jade Walker at Blue Star

The second part of Blue Star Contemporary’s Texas Biennial exhibitions is now on view with Quadri-Poise, work by Texas mixed media artist Jade Walker. Walker’s sewn and tufted  installations and sculptures depict the human body and its organs in piles of abstract whimsy that often look like a cross between a costume bin and...

Review: Albert Alvarez at Fl!ght Gallery

Review: Albert Alvarez at Fl!ght Gallery

Albert Alvarez’s show of drawings and a single painting at Fl!ght Gallery were, from a distance, innocent enough. Black ink drawings rendered envelope-size. But when approached, the painstakingly hatched characters — slovenly obese, wretched, and just plain disturbed — become electric.

Worth a trip: BLACK WATCH in Austin

OK, I know this isn’t the Austin “Current,” but, honestly, if you’ve any interest at all in some of the best theater seen in America in the last five years, head up to the capitol this week to catch the rare touring production of BLACK WATCH, Gregory Burke’s astonishing chronicle of the Scottish Guard’s...

Also seen: OH, THE HUMANITY in Houston

Longtime readers of the Current know that I’m often baffled by the programming choices for theater in San Antonio: it’s as if the city’s artistic directors go out of their way to ignore America’s most talked-about playwrights. (I mean, honestly, how many more revivals of Steel Magnolias can any city require? or even survive?)...

If you can’t follow the game, you won’t understand dance

Scott Andrews sandrews@sacurrent.com Reading last week’s Spuriosity, I was happy to see a point being made by a sports writer that should have come from the art world. Appreciating sports or art demands similar engagement by the viewer. The two endeavors aren’t so different, though they seem to mark two sides of a cultural...

Theater review: Legally Blonde, The Musical

Theater review: Legally Blonde, The Musical

The cleverness and theatrical savvy of Legally Blonde won me over: yes, it’s silly and hopelessly cliché, with songs that actually argue that love can get you into Harvard Law School, instead of, say, bile or a surname of Kennedy, But it’s generally well-crafted silliness.

Review: 9 to 5, The Musical

Review: 9 to 5, The Musical

It’s rare for a nationally touring musical to feature a production that differs significantly from the Broadway incarnation; after all, it’s on the basis of a (usually healthy) Broadway run that a tour gets a green light at all. So it’s both an opportunity (and, to be frank, a curiosity) that San Antonians can...
