Listen to Bekah Kelso’s Dark Take on “Frosty the Snowman”

“Make your way through the snowy darkness with the creepiest incarnation of Frosty the Snowman you’ve ever heard,” is how 2013 SA Music Awards Best Singer-Songwriter/Best Song (“Sequoia”) winner Bekah Kelso describes “Frosty the Snowman,” her dark take on the Christmas classic. “Laugh. Enjoy. Beware.” Those who know me know I’m not the Christmas type and you won’t find any Christmas albums in my collection, but for this one I’ll make an exception: it’s an edgy, cool, funny take on Frosty, and one of the best things Kelso has ever recorded. The song is an early, very early preview of Strange Holiday, a Christmas album or EP she will release in 2014. The song will be officially released (and available for download) on Wednesday, November 27, but you heard it here first.

“For the last two years during the holiday season, I’ve been performing a dark jazzy version of Frosty, set in a minor key,” Kelso told the Current. “It’s always a crowd favorite, people love the song and are usually floored to hear it in such a creepy context, so this year we decided to get in the studio and make it happen.”

The song was co-produced by Damián Rodríguez (Bekah’s guitarist and Best Producer winner at the 2013 SA Music Awards; he played all guitars, bass cuatro midi and percussion) and is part of a collection of “creepy” holiday tunes Kelso wanted to release in December, until choosing to only release the single instead. The rest of her usual band also took part of the recording: Ryan Kelso on drums and Ricky Hernández on keyboards and accordion.

“I’d hoped to have an entire Strange Holiday EP ready to release, but we made the executive decision to cool our jets on and keep working, possibly fleshing it out to a full length holiday album but at the very least, taking more time with the five tracks we have to get them up to the level of ‘strange beauty’ that I’m going for,” said Kelso. “I’m planning to release Strange Holiday in 2014, but am excited that Frosty is ready now and feel like it’s a great preview of next year’s release, whatever form that will take (album or EP).”

If you like the song, starting tomorrow, November 27, you can buy/download the song here.
