Stay Current with the Pick of the Day: Qwel & Maker
In the high-respect, low-profile realm of underground hip-hop, Chicago wordsmith Qwel has already earned his stripes. For more than 10 years, Qwel has been a prolific creator — turning out no fewer than 20 solo and collaborative albums full of his thoughtful, dizzyingly fluid rhymes. His work with the socially conscious, and freakishly good, hip-hop collective Typical Cats stands among the finest the genre has seen this side of Y2K. He comes to 502 Bar with longtime collaborator and producer Maker in tow, as they tour the U.S. behind their fourth joint effort Beautiful Raw (out May 7). This is a show that diehard hip-hop heads will flip for and which youngsters, new to the craft of actually saying something within rap’s often vapid context, could stand to learn a lot from. $7-10, 10 pm Monday, 502 Bar, 502 Embassy Oaks, (210) 257-8125, brownpapertickets.com.
