Stay Current with the Pick of the Day: SOLI Chamber Ensemble: “Power of the Story”
Winner of a 2013 CMA/ASCAP Adventurous Programming Award, SA’s own SOLI Chamber Ensemble (Ertan Torgul, violin; Stephanie Key, clarinet; Carolyn True, piano; and David Mollenauer, cello) prides itself on “giving new voice to 20th- and 21st-century classical contemporary music.” Since 1994, the decidedly unstuffy quartet has commissioned more than 30 new works penned by emerging and established composers including Steven Mackey, Paul Moravec, Ned Rorem, Robert X. Rodriguez, Tim Kramer, David Heuser, Alexandra Garner, and Jack Stamps. Titled “Year of the New,” SOLI’s 2012-2013 season draws to a close this week with a program celebrating “the voice and the story.” Premiering at Trinity’s Ruth Taylor Recital Hall on Tuesday with an encore performance at Gallery Nord on Wednesday, “Power of the Story” unites the ensemble with renowned baritone Timothy Jones and internationally recognized flutist Angela Jones-Reus. Inspired by the poems of famous Israeli poet Yehuda Amichai, Daniel Asia’s Amichai Songs take center stage in a program that also features Frederic Rzewski’s activist work Coming Together (based on a letter written by an inmate killed in the Attica prison uprising of 1971), Judith Shatin’s Goethe-inspired piece Werther, Tobias Picker’s setting of I am in Need of Music by poet Elizabeth Bishop, Jeffery Mumford’s further evolving…, and the world premiere of Asia’s The Jane Set. The artists and composers lead pre-concert talks (7pm) before each performance. $10-$20, 7:30pm Tuesday, Ruth Taylor Recital Hall, Trinity University, 1 Trinity; 7:30pm Wednesday, Gallery Nord, 2009 NW Military Hwy, solichamberensemble.com.
