Equality Walk Processional to Occur on Riverwalk Tonight

December 9, 2011

Friends, please take a moment to read this press release (as posted by Richard Noble on Facebook) and join Richard as he makes his way through San Antonio tonight.

As we move into the weekend marking the 63rd anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and their allies plan a historic walk along San Antonio’s famed Riverwalk on December 9, 2011 beginning at Main Plaza at 6:30 p.m. to raise awareness of the need for full legal equality for LGBT people and promote a message of human rights for all.

What: Equality Walk for Full LGBT Equality.

When: December 9, 2011 at 6:30 p.m.

Where: Beginning at Main Plaza in San Antonio, Texas with a Riverwalk Processional.

While area residents will be starting their procession Friday night, the walk did not begin there.  In fact, it began in March, 2011, when Richard Noble began his record breaking walk from San Francisco’s Golden Gate bridge to Washington D.C., carrying the Rainbow Flag and a message of hope for the LGBT community.

“It pains me to see cities and states falling behind in equal rights and protections under the legal terms ‘sexual orientation and gender identity,’” said Noble.  “I’m happy to join the San Antonio’s LGBT population, friends and allies in the Walk Across America on Friday evening as we petition the federal government to bring about our long awaited equality and raise awareness in our demand for full federal equality. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is an American entitlement and we look forward to a relationship with the City of San Antonio as Texans rise to the heights of awareness regarding civil rights and equality for all its citizens.”

A Federal Bill is slated to be introduced by Representative Jared Polis (D-CO2) in January, 2012, which if adopted by the legislature will expand legal protections already afforded to other minority and suspect classes to people based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

James Poindexter, an organizer for Pride San Antonio, stated, “Pride San Antonio celebrates the courage of the Walk Across America and is honored to have it pass through our historic city.  We believe this walk will raise awareness and bring the issues to unique pockets of the country that perhaps have never thought about them before.”

Although equal rights for LGBT people are often discredited by the majority, activists and advocates for human rights are hopeful that more allies will come forward and speak against discrimination in all forms.  Secretary of Defense Hillary Clinton frankly addressed an audience in Geneva on the issue of LGBT rights, stating, “Like being a woman, like being a racial, religious, tribal, or ethnic minority, being LGBT does not make you less human. And that is why gay rights are human rights, and human rights are gay rights.”

“She is absolutely correct,” noted Jay Morris, Texas State Lead for GetEQUAL, an organization devoted to empowering people to take a bold stand on behalf of full federal equality for LGBT people.  “Some may believe that LGBT people deserve ‘less than’ status, but if we allow any segment of our populace to suffer discrimination, all of our populace suffers. Representative Polis’ omnibus legislation, Richard’s walk and our joining in his walk are about putting an unequivocal end to human rights violations.”

All persons who support equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and families are encouraged to attend. For more information about Richard Noble’s Walk Across America, visit http://walk.usfreedomring.com/.

We can never repay Richard for the sacrifice that he has committed himself to promote full and equal federal Equality. Without people like him, and there are very few like him, we might never bring education to an uninformed people. with great hardship, determination and grit, he has weathered storms, crippling loneliness, and sometimes fear and prejudice on this journey. Richard takes with him to every community the love of educating this often times ignorant, backward thinking, beautiful nation in which we live. Rock on Richard. You are a true hero to those that live marginalized by this society. Richard, you are my rock star. Thank you.
