DENVER — Hundreds of  hopeful brewers and brewery owners stood for more than two hours at the Great American Beer Festival Saturday to see if they had achieved beer greatness. In the end, Colorado and California breweries walked away with a pile of medals. Texas breweries and brewpubs had four, including one that has been making beer for only about six months.

The only gold went to Humperdink’s of Dallas for their American-style Amber Ale. The Uncle Billy’s brewpub location at Lake Travis won silver for the Bottle Rocket Lager in the kellerbier/zwickelbier category under brewer Brian “Swifty” Peters, who is no stranger to GABF medals.

In Belgian-style lambic or sour beer category, well-established North by Northwest brewpub of Austin won bronze for its cherry lambic Barton Kriek. The newcomer Austin Beerworks, which specializes in canned craft beer, won silver with its Peacemaker Extra Pale Ale in the English-style summer ale category.

Texas breweries had five medals last year, but three went to Houston’s Saint Arnold Brewing Co.
