Todd Barry is way better than a turkey leg

May 14, 2012

Comedy nerds rejoice, Todd Barry is coming to San Antonio. Now I don’t really expect everyone reading this to know why that’s a big deal, so let me explain. This city has a terrible reputation for apathy and a general disregard when it comes to anything considered “cool” or outside the mainstream. If there isn’t an over-sized turkey leg and a bud light vendor attached, we don’t want anything to do with it. Oh sure, we’ll hit “join” on Facebook invites so people will think we have active social lives, but truthfully not many people here are willing to go or think outside the Redbox, so to speak. Top that off with our general acceptance of mediocrity and the least-we-can-do-will-work ethic and you have a perfect reason why San Antonio is considered lame.

However some national touring acts are starting to give us another chance as venues like the 502 and now (finally) the Korova are investing in quality sound systems and people actually knowledgeable to run them. Yes, real sound engineers, as opposed to 90′s era highlight-sporting, ex-rockers maxing up the dials and yelling ‘It’s PUNK RAWK’ while the entire audience leaves one song into a band’s hour set. (Same guy one year later: “Man, nobody wants to support shows in this town.” Yeah, I wonder why, stupid!)

So to see an act like Todd Barry take a chance on what’s nationally thought of as a dumb, lazy waste of a town is extremely uplifting. Oh sure, some of you reading this may not like his brand of laid back, clever comedy, that’s fine. Go and enjoy your dollar rental flicks and corporate chain restaurant decorated as if the entire catalog of pop culture threw up on Andy Warhol’s bare, pasty ass.

But for those of you who are even slightly familiar with his brilliant stand up CD’s, his work with shows like Flight of the Conchords, Squidbillies, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, or his appearances on Conan and Letterman — buy a ticket and actually support a show. It’s either that or chew a turkey leg, drink your beer, and keep wondering why there’s “nothing goin on in San Antonio.”

Remember the bongo-mad “Doggie Bounce” maniac? Now I’m getting through?

PUNK RAWK!

Todd Barry performs at the Korova 107 E Martin. 9pm Wed, May 16. Doors open at 8:30 and presale tickets can be purchased online at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/237884 $14

When was the last time you were at the venue? Just recently, the entire sound system from speakers to mics has been upgraded with the help from our friends at Alamo Music Center. You might want to give the venue another shot soon.

Are you gonna record his set on minidisc?

Damn sounds like you hate your own city. You and this trendy, hipster rag should get the fuck out of dodge. Maybe people want to hear comedy not wait a second, white collar laughs.

There is a strict no audio or video recording policy of any kind for this event, but that would be pretty sweet if we could.

Sorry, that was a reference to a Todd Barry joke.
