Bonehead Quote of the Week: U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert on LGBT ‘Intolerance’
Following the passage of a Mississippi bill that gay rights activists say may usher in state-sanctioned LGBT discrimination, Texas’ U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert praised the new law on religious-right outlet Washington Watch, hosted by Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins (who stood alongside the governor as he signed the measure into law). Gohmert also took the time to single out and attack the real victims in all of this—the intolerant gay rights critics (of course), reports Right Wing Watch:
“You’ve seen it first hand, there is nobody more intolerant in this country than those that are screaming for tolerance,” said Gohmert. “Christians are not intolerant but whoa, goodness these people that have their leftist agenda that are so intolerant so thanks for having the courage to stand up.”
Titled the “Religious Freedom Restoration Act,” the legislation grants businesses the ability to practice religion sans government interference but the ‘intolerant’ critics worry that the bill language is written so vaguely that it could allow shop owners to turn away the LGBT community on the basis of religious bias.
With the fate of marriage equality still in limbo for hundreds of thousands of couples across the nation, with the act of ‘sodomy’ still on the books in Texas and with LGBT hate crimes hitting a five-year high, it’s pretty hard to stomach calling another attempt at restricting the LGBT community, albeit potentially, ‘courageous.’ It’s even harder not to point to the pot calling the kettle black— Gohmert previously linked homosexuality to pedophilia and gay marriage to the destruction of civilization. How’s that for tolerant?
