Lone Star Awards

The San Antonio Current picked up three awards last night at the Houston Press Club’s annual Lone Star Awards. Held at a restaurant and banquet facility offering views of the Port of Houston Ship Channel, the ceremony united outlets from across the state (including reps from newspapers, magazines, television and radio stations, and public relations firms) and followed a Texas history theme brought to life by a crew of historical reenactors.

Having competed in the category of newspapers with a circulation under 50,000, the Current won first place for Print News or Feature Story with former staffer Michael Barajs’ “Portrait of a Shattered Family” (a moving profile of Charity Lee, a woman whose life has been shaped by murder and now helps counsel families of both murder victims and murderers), second place for Print General Commentary/Criticism with Editor-in-Chief Callie Enlow’s “Ride and/or Die” (a blog addressing cycling safety and sharing the road in the context of a hit-and-run accident) and second place for Journalist of the Year based on former staffer Mary Tuma’s coverage of reproductive rights in Texas, including the cover story “Texas Abortion Providers Fear They May Not Survive New Regulations” and the blog “Anti-abortion Bill Dies After Senate Filibuster.”
