Video: Maidana Convincingly Outpoints Broner at the Alamodome

The new champ right after the fight.

Argentina’s Marcos “El Chino” Maidana (35-3 with 31 KOs) beat previously undefeated WBA welterweight champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner (27-1 with 22 KOs) on a unanimous decision Saturday night at the Alamodome. The score cards read 115-110, 116-109 and 117-109 for the Santa Fe, Argentina power puncher. The Current scored it 117-111 for Maidana.

Right from the start, the Argentina slugger (who is showing improved boxing skills under the tutelage of trainer Robert García) went after Broner, who nearly went down in the first and was effectively knocked down in the second and eighth rounds. Referee Laurence Cole’s performance was poor. He took a point away from Maidana on round 8 due to a headbutt (a round Maidana should’ve won 10-8), but failed to do the same to Broner, who showed illegal tactics like pushing Maidana’s face with an open glove throughout the fight, and even humping him once (a favor Maidana returned later in the fight; neither fighter was penalized for it). Maidana controlled the fight with power punches and relentless pressure, and Broner never hurt Maidana, even though he did connect some good punches in the second half of the fight, when he knew he needed a KO to win.

“Broner is a pretty dirty fighter,” Maidana, the new welterweight champion and former interim light welterweight champ said, but he’s willing to give Broner a rematch. Asked whether he’d like to fight in Argentina, where he’s very popular, he said “I fight wherever. A champion fights anywhere.”

Besides beating Broner, Maidana exposed him as a good but overrated fighter who shouldn’t be compared to Floyd Mayweather Jr. Nevertheless, Mayweather offered support for his friend Broner.

“Hold your head up champ,” Mayweather tweeted. “I love you. A true champion can take a loss and bounce back, my lil brother.”

To Broner’s credit, he kept on fighting this punching machine despite being floored twice.

Best of all: it was another boxing party in San Antonio, which is quickly becoming a major, scandal-free boxing capital.

“Broner walking out w/a rapper/hype-man, recreating tired video tropes,” Councilman Diego Bernal tweeted before the fight. “1) He’s no Mayweather, 2) MC Gibberish is no Bieber.”

While waiting for the scorecards, Bernal agreed with everyone who saw the fight.

“There is no way Broner win this fight. Not a chance.” When the scores were read, he tweeted, “Aaaaand… the crowd goes ape-crazy loud. The new champ earned it.”

I couldn’t agree more.
